Browning Superposed Lightning 20-gauge O/U Made 1960
Description: The Browning Superposed was designed by John Moses Browning who invented some of the most famous firearms in history including the M1911, the M1917/1919 .30-cal MG, the M2 .50-cal HMG, the M1887/1897/1912 shotguns, the M1886/1892/1894 lever action rifles, the Hi Power pistol, the M1918 BAR, and the Auto-5 shotgun. Mr. Browning began designing the Superposed sometime in 1922. Unfortunately, he never finished it himself, passing away in 1926. His son, Val Browning, took up his father’s work and completed the design details. Despite the name attached to the shotgun’s design, several American manufacturers rejected it. Val eventually granted production rights under a royalty agreement under his patents in 1931 to Fabrique Nationale in Belgium. Soon, the Superposed was selling in the U.S. – introducing the American sportsman to high-tech innovations such as the selective trigger, auto-ejectors, and the ventilated rib. John Browning originally intended the Superposed to be any “everyman’s” shotgun, something that was affordable and reliable. Its reputation spread like wildfire and the Superposed ultimately became a legend among sportsman. The Superposed Lightning shown here is in good condition though it well-used. It was built in Belgium at the FN factory in 1960. The barrel set has a Modified choke over an Improved cylinder choke. The front sight is a silver bead. The receiver features Grade 1 engraving. The bluing is in worn on the lower sides and bottom of the receiver, as well as the trigger guard and lower tang. The barrels have some minor pitting on the muzzle, and to a much lesser extent on the left hand side of the over barrel near the muzzle. The barrel has some light finish loss on the right hand side near the front of the forend. The gold trigger has some of the plating worn on the tip. The stock and forend exhibit light handling wear. There is some slight finish loss under the safety which is common to any shotgun using a tang-mounted safety. It’s obvious that this shotgun has seen some use. However, the bores of both barrels are in fantastic shape. This Superposed should continue to give valuable service as it has obviously done so for 60 years.
