The Browning Superposed is one of John Browning’s most brilliant designs. Produced in plain-jane field grades to the most elaborately engraved and finely stocked shotguns ever seen, production of the Browning Superposed was done in Belgium, running strong from 1931 through 1977 when traditional production stopped. This fine Diana Grade, sn22727 made in 1961 during the most desirable era of the Superposed; before the “salt years” that ran from 1967 to 1972, and with the LONG TANG ROUND KNOB pistol grip before the change in 1966 to the far less desirable short-tang trigger guard. This is a grand example of a high-grade Browning Diana Grade, with extraordinary wood, long tang trigger guard, incredible hand cut, deep-carved engraving with deep-relief game scenes, shaded backgrounds, and wonderful bank-note style scroll signed by R. Risak (Raymond). This gun retains 99% of the barrel blue and French Grey on the action, 98% of the gold plating on the triggers, and all the factory wood finish with just a few minor field marks in the finish only, not into the wood. They only made about 150 Diana Grade 20 ga. hunting guns before the changes in 1966, and as such these early guns are highly sought after compared to later era guns. While searching the internet, keep in mind that some of the Diana guns shown are guns that left the factory as Grade 1 guns and were later upgraded to a Diana by Angelo Bee, Gino Cargnel, or some other engraver. Others are from the salt year between 1967 and 1972 with the short tang trigger guard, and later guns have the squared-off pistol grip. None of these later guns are worth what the pre-1966 guns are worth. Also, guns that have been restocked with aftermarket wood, have rubber butt pads, or Skeet guns with fat forearms are all less valuable and hence may appear to be a “cheaper” alternative. The best investment and value are the guns as shown here, early 1960’s guns in high condition and desirable M/F field chokes. This gun weighs just 6lbs. 5oz. with its 26.5” barrels and balances perfectly on the hinge pin…a true upland gun. Most Browning Superposed 20ga. guns weigh 6 ½ pounds or more. The gun has been used very little and still is firm on the hinge and tight on face. The bores are excellent and the mechanics function perfectly. This is a gorgeous Diana Grade priced well under market value for a pre-1966 gun and will make a great field gun that will continue to grow in value as you enjoy its use. With the factory 3” chambers and fast handling characteristics, this is the ultimate pheasant gun with heavy loads. Just in time for summer practice and to be ready for the fast-approaching hunting season. Time to treat yourself to one of the most handsome Superposed grades they made…the Diana Grade!
