Browning Superposed 12 Gauge – EXHIBITION GRADE D4G, 2-BARREL SET, vintage firearms inc
Description:
General Specs: Browning, Year 1975, 12 Gauge, Set #1= 7lbs 3oz; Set #2=6lbs 14oz
Serial Number: 54887 S75
The Browning Superposed is one of the finest over/under shotguns in history and one of John Browning’s most brilliant designs. Produced in plain-jane field grades to the most elaborately engraved and finely stocked shotguns ever seen, production of the Browning Superposed was done in the Fabrique Nationale Herstal (FN) Belgium plant, running strong from 1931 through 1977 when traditional production stopped. The Superposed Browning had a strong European market and there were many grades and guns made that we in America have rarely seen. This Superposed “SPECIAL SKEET” two- barrel set was made for that Euro market and is a true Exhibition Grade in the D4 G engraving pattern. This gun, sn54887 S75 built in 1975 and shipped in 1979, is in MINT, UNFIRED, FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION, COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL CASE, ALL PAPERWORK, AND EVEN INCLUDES THE ORIGINAL PATTERN TARGETS FROM THE FN TEST RANGE. Look closely at the photos and you will see a stunning, versatile shotgun with fabulous French walnut stocks that include drop points and 3-piece forends, the original buttplate, gold inlay in the pistol grip, and perfect 25lpi checkering. The 3-piece forends are only found on Browning’s highest-grade guns. The deeply chiseled engraving is double signed, first by FN engraver Renae DeWil, and second by the very talented G. Renaers. You can see this pattern mentioned in Ned Schwing’s seminal book “The BROWNING SUPERPOSED” on page383, along with a description of the characteristics. The heavily chiseled Acanthus style scroll with shaded background is stunning, and the game scenes are more elaborate and deeply cut than the well-known Diana grade. Both sets of barrels measure 27 ½”, with set #1 being the Skeet Special set including a beavertail style forearm and a Broadway style wide ventilated rib, both barrels choked Skeet. Set #2 was meant for field use and casual sporting clays choked LM/IM (.013/.027) and has the slender “tulip” style forend (we call it a schnable forend). The gun weighs 7 1/4lbs. with the skeet barrels and 6lbs. 14oz. with the field barrels, both sets balancing the gun perfectly on the hinge pin. The weights and balance are perfect for skeet and the field set makes this a VERY LIGHTWEIGHT 12ga. field gun. The Superposed Exhibition in D4 G grade has all the working parts, both exterior and interior, highly hand-polished for both looks and function. You won’t find a more-rare Browning Superposed than this one, with a total of 13 D4 G grades on record and there is likely only one made up as a “SKEET SPECIAL TWO-BARREL SET”. The included paperwork completely documents this gun and verifies our description and the gun’s authenticity…there are no “stories” that go with it…this is the real deal. Cased in the original factory case, this is both a true investment quality set and a versatile sporting/upland gun as well. You will likely never see another like this one, so don’t hesitate or she will be gone! Thanks for looking.
