The FN Browning Auto-5 “Fucile Special Pour Bécasse” is a highly desirable European-market variation of John M. Browning’s legendary Auto-5, combining the proven reliability of the long-recoil operating system with deluxe engraving, gold inlays, and exhibition-grade walnut. Built by Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Herstal, Belgium, this special-order model was designed specifically for woodcock hunting and is seldom encountered outside the European market. Chambered in 12 gauge with a 2.75" chamber, the shotgun features a 25.5" barrel choked Improved Modified (.026"). While many woodcock guns are associated with open chokes, European hunters often preferred slightly tighter constrictions to maximize effectiveness in mixed-cover shooting where shots could vary from close flushes to longer opportunities. The compact barrel length provides exceptionally quick handling in dense woodland environments. The shotgun weighs 8 pounds 1.8 ounces, giving it the steady swing and recoil absorption characteristic of the Light Twelve Auto-5. The gun operates via Browning's famous long-recoil semi-automatic action, one of the most successful sporting shotgun designs ever developed. The action remains smooth and reliable, while the trigger is crisp and the bore is clear. This example remains in very good overall condition, displaying only faint wear consistent with careful use over the years. Mechanically, it remains strong and fully functional. The receiver is finished in deep blue and enhanced with tasteful scroll engraving. Particularly attractive are the extensive gold inlays that distinguish this special model. The left side of the receiver features “Light Twelve” and a portrait of John M. Browning rendered in gold, while the rear of the receiver displays the FN Herstal logo inlaid in gold immediately ahead of the stock wrist. The blued barrel carries one of the model's most distinctive features: “Fusil Special Pour Bécasse” inlaid in gold on the top rib. Translated from French, this means “Special Shotgun for Woodcock,” identifying the gun as a dedicated woodcock model intended for the European sporting market. The shotgun is fitted with exceptional exhibition-grade walnut featuring rich figure and color. The stock and forend display sharp diamond-point checkering, while the original FN Browning Auto-5 buttplate completes the package. The quality of the wood selected for this model is substantially above that found on standard production Auto-5s and contributes significantly to its visual appeal and collector interest. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition. This is a scarce and highly attractive Belgian-made Browning Auto-5 that combines the legendary Auto-5 action with deluxe European-market features seldom seen in North America. Between the gold inlays, exhibition walnut, and rare “Special Pour Bécasse” designation, it represents a unique opportunity to acquire one of the more distinctive and elegant variations of the iconic FN Browning Auto-5.
