Description: HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT BROWNING SUPERPOSED MANUFACTURED IN 1932
Description:
This Browning Superposed Grade C-1 shotgun was manufactured in 1932 (serial number 3735) This gun features the standard English style Field stock (one of 3 options available) and double trigger with top safety. The raised matted solid top rib barrels measure 28" and are choked Mod/Full. The stock dimensions are original to the factory specifications with a LOP of 14 1/4" to the end of an original vented 'Hawkins' rubber pad, DAC of 1 1/2" and DAH of 2 1/4". The gun weighs approximately 6 lbs 7oz. At the date of manufacture, the Superposed was only available in 12 gauge.
This gun remains all original and shows evidence of regular use during its 80+ years of service. However, given the original condition there are no cracks in the finely figured European walnut stock, the color case hardened finish shows evidence of rubbing from years in the field yet retains a patina of it's original color. Barrels are unpitted and shiny with no pitting noted. As typical of the early Superposed's, the barrels do not have any choke markings of any kind and were measured by the Seller. Barrel bluing shows typical wear for a gun of this age such as minor blemishes and fading but retains an estimated 90+% of its original finish. Mechanically the gun appears to function as designed. Triggers operate crisply, automatic safety functions properly (see below) and when opened after firing (using snap caps) the ejectors both functioned as designed.
Historical Significance:
This gun was ordered by Mr. C. S. Couchman an executive of The Aviation Corporation the parent company of what was to what was to become American Airlines. Also of note is that the Aviation Corporation was acquired by E.L. Cord (of the Cord automobile company) after a highly publicized takeover fight. Mr. Couchman was then let go and became a member of the 'great army of unemployed', which letter reflects the difficult times of the Great Depression.
Mr. Couchman dealt directly with Val Browning regarding the purchase of this gun. Val Browning indicates in his letter of November 1932 that this gun is the 1st one made with an automatic safety !! Further support for this unique gun comes from the Browning Historian which indicates the gun was purchased from Val Browning by Mr. Couchman. Included with this gun are copies of correspondence between Val Browning and Mr. Couchman along with some additional information regarding E. L. Cord. It is unclear how this other information became a part of the guns providence.
This gun comes with a case included at the time of purchase. This case appears to be the original case when the gun was delivered, however this cannot be verified.
