Adams1938-2020 | Shooting Sportsman Magazine Charles Boswell Single-Shot Boxlock 20 Gauge – Serial No. 13053 A true rarity in the world of British sporting arms, this Charles Boswell single-shot 20 gauge shotgun, serial number 13053, stands as a refined and minimalist expression of London gunmaking at its best. Crafted by one of England’s most respected independent makers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this gun exemplifies purpose-built precision for the discerning field shooter or serious collector. Built on a boxlock action and fitted with a single trigger, this is a purpose-driven, elegantly understated single-shot breech-loading shotgun—a highly uncommon configuration in the Boswell canon, especially in 20 gauge. Its 32-inch barrel is devoid of a traditional rib, instead featuring a simple flat matted plane near the breech to aid natural sighting. This clean profile, combined with the barrel’s length, gives the gun exceptional pointability and smooth follow-through, ideally suited to deliberate single-shot applications such as high pheasants or classic walk-up shooting. The receiver is finished in coin silver, setting off subtle English rose-and-scroll engraving that adds refinement without excess. The gun’s weight is just 4 lbs. 11 oz., making it remarkably light for a 32" gun and ensuring responsive handling and superb balance. The finely figured English walnut stock is shaped in the classic straight-hand style, with finely cut checkering and a leather-covered recoil pad. The wood-to-metal fit is tight and traditional, with dimensions as follows: - Length of Pull: 14 1/2" - Drop at Comb: 1 1/2" - Drop at Heel: 1 3/4" - Cast: Neutral (zero cast) The gun is housed in a vintage leather leg-o-mutton case, consistent with its period and style, offering both protection and added collector appeal. Charles Boswell’s name is synonymous with durability, elegance, and shooting performance. While most Boswells were produced as side-by-sides, this single-shot boxlock 20 bore is a rare outlier—executed with the same level of hand craftsmanship and traditional British character that made Boswell a respected name among London’s bespoke gunmakers. Serial No. 13053 is not only a beautifully made firearm but a truly unique example in configuration and execution—a fine addition to any advanced collection or a joy to carry afield for those who appreciate single-purpose sporting arms.
