E. J. Churchill Early (1911)Best Boxlock 20 Gauge
Description: Early E.J.Churchill 20 gauge Best Boxlock Ejector S/N 1856 in factory trunk case with all accessories and snap on padded canvas cover, with 26" steel Nitro-proof barrels, beautiful full coverage scroll engraving by Sumner, who engraved all the early Churchill guns while Edwin Churchill was alive and also engraved Boss guns in that era. This gun has the third fastener, which Robert Churchill later dropped, and is more than equivalent to the later Hercules grade A&D guns introduced in 1913 which cost 50 guineas vs. the Premier SLE model which sold for 60 guineas. There is a Hercules grade Churchill currently for sale on this site for $11K which does not have the build quality this gun has. This gun has all original finishes on wood and metal. Originally proofed for 7/8 oz. loads, the gun weighs 5 lbs. 6 ozs. and is like the proverbial magic wand. The only alteration done to this gun is that the chambers were lengthened long ago to 2 3/4". I sent it to Kirk Merrington for evaluation and he sent a written evaluation stating it was fine for any 7/8 oz. load as originally proved. Evaluation is included. Minimum wall thickness and bore diameter 9" from breech is Right .029/0.619 "and Left .034/ .621". Ejectors are timed perfectly and very strong. Stock is figured straight English to checked butt with a tiny splinter forend. Wood has original finish with no splits or cracks anywhere. Leather trunk case is in good condition with good handle and straps and all accessories( rod, oil bottle, snap caps, etc.) Just a beautiful, dainty, tight, super quality scarce 20 bore bird gun from the Golden Era before WWI.
