BRITTE 12 Gauge Barreled Action
Description:
BRITTE 12 Gauge Barreled Action, 27 1/2" barrels ~~ $6750
This Britte Barrreled action was manufactured in Belgium by the Britte Arms En Blanc (Britte Guns In The White) Company in the 1930's. This company supplied a number of small Belgian Gunmaking Shops with metalwork they could stock and finish under their own name. One such company known to use Britte metalwork was Jules Bury a well respected Belgian Gunmaker. These are some of the pieces known as the Britte Collection.
In 1936 Britte secured a contract with the Belgian Government for military arms and cease making sporting guns. Approximately 100 Britte shotgun barreled action were in storage from the 1930's until the year 2000. This barreled action had been sitting in storage in a basement in Belgium for about 70 years. Over the course of about 6 months I managed to purchase and import six of these barreled actions and Griffin & Howe bought the rest.
The action is a typical Holland & Holland style sidelock with Purdey double under bolts, a hidden third faster, articulated front trigger and Deeley ejector system. All of these features were considered Best Quality for "between the wars" double gunmaking.
I sent two barreled actions to well respected Double Gunsmith Dennis Potter. Dennis finish bored the barrels, cut chokes (.012" and .020"), forcing cones and 2 3/4" 12 ga. chambers. He finished fit the barrels to the action, installed, tuned and set the double triggers pulls, timed the ejectors, hardened the internal lock parts and installed gold line cocking indicators in the tumblers. Potter also made several needed screws, removed action bolsters below barrel flats and rough shaped the top lever. The Barreled actions were ready for stockmaking.
I stocked and finished one shotgun, the finest custom shotgun to ever come from my workshop. Much of the work I did is detailed in my book Duble Guns and Custom Gunsmithing and a few pages are shown here.
This very special and singular metalwork has been sitting in my workshop for 20years and as I move into retirement am offering it for sale. This metalwork is as fine as one could imagine and probably the finest offered For Sale anywhere. It will require a dedicated and skilled craftsman to make it into an extraordinary 12 gauge double shotgun. At my clients request, I stocked the gun as a pistol grip but the metal will made a lovely straight grip gun as well.
AS a bonus Included are two walnut pre-machined stocks that are contemporary and came with the metalwork. One could be used to stock the gun and either could be used to make a pattern stock for machining.
