Cogswell & Harrison 20 Bore Back Action Hammergun with 29” Nitro Steel Barrels, Long Length of Pull, and Sidelever Opening – 2-3/4” Chambers

This little English wand was made by Cogswell & Harrison in 1881 and has no doubt bewitched shooters ever since. Handsome and great handling this 20 bore back action hammergun serial number 10166 has 29” barrels with 2-3/4” chambers. Made of nicely figured French walnut stock with a long length of pull and a splinter forearm which have a handrubbed oil finish. The action body and peninsula-style lock plates are nicely engraved and the maker’s name is displayed on the lockplates and top rib. It has double triggers and extractors. Presented in a canvas & leather case with brass oil bottle and a key. Very easy to carry for a day afield at 5lb 13oz.

The 29” nitro steel barrels were nitro proofed for 2-3/4” shotshells in London in 1999. They are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The bores are shiny and bright and the bluing in in very good condition. The right barrel is bored 0.615 with a constriction of 0.009 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is generous at 0.038. The left barrel is bored at 0.616 and has a constriction of 0.020 for Improved Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.037.

The straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured French walnut. It has a satin hand rubbed oil finish. The forearm has residual case coloring on the Deeley latch and an ebony forearm tip. The flat-top checkering has been refreshed. There are some handling marks from normal usage on the stock which can be easily touched up by a competent gunsmith. Stock dimensions are 15” over a 7/8” rubber pad  by 1-7/16” by 2-3/8”. Cast off for the righthanded shooter.

This is a great handling little bird gun that has been reproofed and rechambered for 2-3/4” shotshells. It does have some historic minor pitting at the edges of the lockplates and some handling marks on the buttstock. It is cased in a hammergun case but needs some slight fitting for the buttstock.
