** SOLD ** Colt Model 1878 Hammer Double Barrel Shotgun, 12 Gauge, 1885 Vintage
Description: The Colt Model 1878 Hammer Side by Side Shotgun was made from 1878 to 1889, with approximately 22,683 manufactured. The guns were fitted with 28 to 32 inch barrels, blue or browned damascus barrels, double triggers, sideplates, pistol grip stocks, color case hardened breech, extractors/lifters, and chambered in 10 or 12 Gauge. This 1885 vintage, Model 1878 is as described and is fitted with 26 1/8 inch damascus barrels (?), checkered stock and forearm, silver initial plaque on the bottom of the stock, ebony tip on the forearm, bone butt-plate, and chambered in 12 Gauge. This gun is well used, missing most all of its original finishes, with all metal having turned a brown patina. The checkering on the stock and forearm are mostly worn flat and there are cracks at the wrist behind the upper tang and also a crack repaired on the forearm along side the ebony tip. The bores are pitted throughout and there are a few minor dents in the barrels. The action functions well and is surprisingly tight with a tight lock-up. Both hammers appear to be orignal to the gun and are in excellent condition, not bent or cracked. The butt-plate fits well and though the checkering is worn flat, there are no cracks or chips.
