Produced in very limited numbers the Colt Model 1883 shotgun was the highest quality and most expensive American-made double barrel shotgun of that time period. They were available only by custom order, and were bought by the elite bird hunters of the day. Only the finest Belgian Damascus steel was used for the barrels, which was the finest in the world in the late 1800's. This example was manufactured in 1894 and features 30" inch barrels and double triggers. It is in excellent condition overall, with near-perfect barrels that display a beautiful Damascus pattern on the exterior and have mirror-bright bores. The receiver on this Colt has a pleasing look to it and shows traces of the original case colors in some protected areas like under the top lever. The original hand checkered American Walnut stock set is beautiful with lots of contrasting grain and figure showing, and is free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage. The checkered panels on the wrist and forearm show some wear but still show well defined lines. The factory installed name plate on the keel of the butt and the factory buttplate are in excellent condition. The length of pull is 13 & 5/8ths inches to the end of the buttplate from the front trigger. All of the controls on this shotgun are in perfect working order and the gun is perfectly "on face". All in all, this is a great example of one of the finest American-made double barrel shotguns made from the most famous American gunmaker.
