CZ Hammer Coach SxS 12ga 20” Case Hardened Excellent Condition with Original Box
Description: The CZ Coach Gun is meant to be evocative of the Old West and is designed to be similar in appearance to the shotguns used by stagecoach guards in the 1880s. Stagecoach shotguns were originally referred to as “messenger guns”, a term that originated in 1858 when the famous Wells Fargo & Co. purchased Ithaca shotguns for their employees to guard stagecoach shipments traveling the 2,800 miles from Tipton, Missouri to San Francisco. Since these shipments carried anything from passengers to gold, they were prime targets for outlaws. The compact nature of the shotguns meant that they could be brought to bear quickly and fired at relatively close ranges while still providing a decent pattern. Granted, the barrel lengths of these shotguns are shorter than today’s legal limits, so the CZ Hammer Coach is a close, if not accurate replica of the concept of the coach gun. The Hammer Coach is manufactured on behalf of CZ by Huglu of Turkey. This is the same manufacturer of the popular Bob White series of shotguns sold by CZ. The Hammer Coach features 20” barrels with fixed cylinder chokes, dual triggers, Turkish Walnut stock and fore end, a beautiful color case hardened finish on the receiver, and a gloss black chrome finish on the barrels. The butt pad is a color case hardened metal plate. As the shotgun is chambered for 12 ga 3-inch shells, caution should be taken as the metal butt plate will not provide for comfortable shooting over for long periods. The metal butt plate was common in the 1880s as the technology of the time did not allow for a reliable form of rubber to be produced. For example, many revolvers at the turn of the century were equipped with grips made of what was referred to as hard rubber. The rubber technology was so poor the grips would eventually become so hard as to be brittle with the result that cracked or broken grips are commonly found among older revolvers of the period. The metal plate on the hammer coach was intended to make it look more authentic. The metallurgy of the Hammer Coach makes it capable of handling modern loads, however it is intended to be used with low velocity or cowboy loads to reduce felt recoil. The example shown here is previously owned but has seen little if any use. It retains 98 percent or better of the original finish. The wood exhibits little handling wear. The left-hand bore has a small dark spot on the inside wall near the muzzle. It is so shallow that it cannot be felt by fingertip. The rest of the bore is in near-pristine shape, as is the whole of the right-hand bore. The Hammer coach comes with its original box. The built-in box handle has separated at one end, but the box is otherwise in good shape.
