R. G. Owen 'Pigeon Grade' 12 gauge Shotgun

Description:
Here we have a rare bird. R. G. 'Bob' Owen of Sauquoit, New York was arguably the preeminent custom rifle builder in America from 1920- WW2, but he also turned out some shotguns, which are much less common than his rifles. He sourced barreled actions from Birmingham, England and August Heym in Germany before WW2 and in Belgium after WW2, and stocked, engraved, and finished them over here. Rudolph Kornbrath did his engraving until 1937, and A. A. White and others after the war. This shotgun, an English boxlock ejector gun, is S/N 2207, with a hidden third fastener, and factory 2 3/4" chambers with 1 1/4 ounce Birmingham proofs. It is proofed and marked as a .729 bore, which it still is. Engraving, probably by Kornbrath, is excellent quality heavy scroll with 85% coverage and R. W. Owen in a banner on each side of the action. Fine checkering probably done by Bill Snyder of Utica, N. Y., generally considered the best in the business in that era. The word Safe is in gold and safety is non-automatic. It has a gold shield with the initials PAC, most likely made for Paul A. Curtis, a popular sporting magazine and sporting book author in the 1920's & 1930's. He mentions that he had Owen build several guns for him in that era. The gun has a straight-gripped stock of highly figured French walnut with a fancy back action and engraved steel heel and toe plates, and a Anson push button splinter forend, 30" fluid steel barrels, 14 3/4" LOP from front trigger, 1 5/8" DAC, 2 3/4" DAH, and 3/8" cast off for the right hand. Weight is 7 lbs. 6ozs. Right barrel is choked .010" and Left is choked .025". Bores are mint. Just a beautifully made and conditioned gun that will go another century. $5,950.00 or best offer. You won't find many of these around.
