Stock with attractive figure, some minor scattered storage and handling blemishes throughout and a very small repair on the right edge of forend just above cross-wedge fastener. Tight and On Face. Barrels ring true. Nice bores. Mechanically excellent. PROVENANCE: The maker’s records confirm that this gun was manufactured in 1866. Per maker's records the original owner of the gun was well-known Scottish surgeon & toxicologist/forensic scientist Sir Andrew Douglas Maclagan, who gave court evidence in many high-profile trials including the Burke and Hare case (a series of 16 murders where the murderers sold the corpses to a Doctor for dissection at his anatomy lectures; this was the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Body Snatcher" and numerous other fictionalized portrayals on stage and screen) and the trial of Eugene Marie Chantrelle (convicted of murdering his wife; claimed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's character Dr. Jekyll in "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde"). ADDITIONAL NOTES ON FEATURES: In his book "John Dickson & Son – The Round Action Gunmaker" author Donald Dallas notes on pages 64-65 that the Lancaster slide and drop action was commonly used on Dickson guns in the 1860's. The great merit of the 'Lancaster patent' was its strength and it was built by many makers well into the 1860's including Dickson. Also on page 65 of his book, he notes that the first Dickson centerfire gun (no. 2601) made its appearance in 1865. As Dickson continued to make both pinfire and centerfire guns for a time, this gun (no. 2699) represents a unique opportunity to own one of the earliest centerfire guns made by Dickson, and one of only 32 recorded Dickson hammerguns made utilizing the strong and graceful Lancaster slide and drop design. A rare example of an incredibly early center fire hammergun by a premium maker, with interesting provenance, this specific gun is featured in Donald Dallas' book “John Dickson & Son – The Round Action Gunmaker” on pages 77 (description) and 78 (full page color photo).
