John Dickson & Son 12 Bore Hammergun with Highly Figured 31” Nitro Damascus Barrels
Description: *** PRICE CHANGE *** JUST IN FROM THE DICKSON WORKSHOP IN SCOTLAND *** Very handsome John Dickson & Son12 bore snap action non-ejector hammergun with rebounding hammers, extensive engraving, highly figured wood, and a Purdey thumbhole opening lever. The 31” nitro Damascus barrels are very highly figured and really set out this hammer double as something quite special. Something else to note is how trim the thumbhole trigger guard is; on many other guns they are oversized. No. 3056 was made in 1871 when hammerguns were made with very trim, svelte action bodies made possible by the lack of ejectors in that era. Above average in weight at 7lb 8oz. Ideal for game or clays. SPECIAL NOTE: The purchasers of Dickson firearms consigned by the maker to MacNab Fine Firearms receive a full manufacturers provenance letter with details of the original owners. *** The 31” Damascus barrels were Birmingham nitro proofed at 18.7mm in 2018 and have shiny bores. They are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells and are topped by a raised, concave gamestyle rib. The barrels were actually made around 1880 by James MacNaughton & Sons as the rib is inscribed “James MacNaughton 26 Hanover Street Edinburgh”. There has to be an interesting story behind that! The right barrel is bored 0.736 with a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.035. The left barrel is also bored 0.736 and has a constriction of 0.033 for Three-Quarter choke. Minimum wall thickness is also 0.035. This is actually a very effective choking for driven grouse shooting. Don’t make the common error of writing off cylinder choke as it is actually quite lethal and has an effective pattern much further out than is conventionally thought. *** The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured European walnut. The checkering is crisp and the hand rubbed oil finish is superb. The forearm has a wedge fastener. Stock dimensions are 14-1-2” including a half-inch eboy buttplate by 1-1/2” by 2-3/8”. Cast off for the right hand shot. Comes with a canvas & leather motor case supplied by MacNaughtons most likely when the replacement barrels were fitted to the gun. The interior has a MacNaughton maker's label but does need some refurbishment. *** Great looking and great handling. If you have ever shot over a Scottish grouse moor then you already know why you should own this gun. If you have not then there’s not a moment to lose. And what better way to start than to purchase a Dickson hammergun to start you on your journey. *** Please note that the photographs are part of the description.
