John Dickson & Son 20 Bore Bar Action Hammergun with 30” Nitro Damascus Barrels – 2-3/4”

Description:
***   SOLD SOLD SOLD   ***   This fabulous 20 bore John Dickson & Son hammergun was owned by Admiral Crawford MacLachlan who had a storied career in the Royal Navy which included command of HMS Royal Oak during the Great War and at the Battle of Jutland. The young Crawford was presented this gun by his father George, the 21st Clan Chief MacLachlan, in 1882 when he was 15 years old. The fact that he received this gift from his father at age 15 explains why this was a 20 bore double gun with a short stock. Fortunately for us this wand of a small bore Dickson has survived in wonderful condition. How many 20 bore Dicksons in this configuration do you think were ever made?

Dickson number 3662 is a bar lock 20 bore hammergun with rebounding locks and 30” nitro reproved Damascus barrels chambered for 2-3/4” cartridges. The Sumner engraving is sharp on the locks and action body. The Damascus barrels are highly figured with a warm rich browning. The French walnut stock and splinter forearm are highly figured as well. Weighs 5lb 6oz. Made with a Scott spindle, Purdey bolt, and top lever opening. Comes with maker’s Order Book entry and provenance. Who could ask for more?

The 30” highly figured nitro Damascus barrels were reproved for nitro 2-3/4” cartridges and have generous wall thickness. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave rib which is inscribed “John Dickson & Son. 63 Princes Street. Edinburgh”. The warm rich browning perfectly highlights the Damascus figure. The bores are shiny and bright with just a very few minor pits typical of guns from that era. The right barrel is bored 0.628 with a constriction of 0.015 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.027. The left barrel is bored 0.633 and has a constriction of 0.022 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025.

The straighthand stock and splinter forearm are crafted from highly figured French walnut. It has a warm, deep handrubbed satin oil finish. It does have a few handling marks from normal usage. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” over a 1-1/2” recoil pad by 1-1/2” Drop at Comb by 2-1/8” Drop at Heel. Cast off slightly for the righthand shot.
