Few sporting guns are as immediately recognizable as a John Dickson & Son Round Action. With its wonderfully compact profile, graceful lines, and distinctly Scottish character, the design remains one of the most admired and most mechanically interesting, hammerless guns ever produced. Original, untouched examples are coveted by collectors. This gun offers something different: the opportunity to own and regularly shoot a Dickson without treating it as a museum piece.
Serial number 5343 was built around the turn of the twentieth century and has since been professionally restored and thoughtfully modernized. The barrels have been sleeved, Birmingham reproofed for 2 3/4-inch cartridges, beautifully reblued, and fitted with Briley screw-in chokes. The action displays vivid renewed case color, while the stock has received a handsome hand-rubbed oil finish. These updates are plainly part of the gun’s history, but they have given it renewed life as a highly usable sporting arm.
The Dickson’s rounded form carries beautifully in the hands, while the straight-grip stock, splinter forend, crisp double triggers, automatic safety, and properly timed ejectors provide the traditional handling expected from a fine British game gun. At 6lbs. 8oz. with 28-inch barrels, it has the dimensions and balance to move naturally on flushing birds while remaining composed enough for an afternoon at the sporting-clays course.
Some collectors may consider screw-in chokes unconventional in a Dickson. The shooter will recognize their practical advantage. Five Briley tubes allow the gun to move easily from close-cover upland hunting to longer range shots. Long stock dimensions, excellent mechanical condition, mirror bores, and substantial barrel-wall measurements further support its role as a gun intended for regular use; see the specifications for details.
This side-by-side is not being represented as an untouched collector’s example. It is an authentic John Dickson Round Action that has been professionally renewed, reproofed, and configured for the modern sportsman. For the buyer who has always wanted to experience one of Scotland’s most celebrated gunmaking designs yet wants the freedom to actually carry and shoot it, this Dickson presents a rare opportunity to do just that! The gun is supplied with a canvas covered case.
