Gorgeous 16 Gauge Made in Ferlach, AUSTRIA

Here we present a Franz Sodia Hammer Side by Side Hammer Shotgun in 16 Gauge, manufactured circa the mid to late 1940s in Ferlach, Austria. Franz Sodia was a renowned gunmaker from Ferlach, Austria, who is known for making high quality, top break action shotguns. In 1870, Anton Sodia, a locksmith by trade, opened up his own gunshop and taught his trade to his son, Franz Sodia, who moved to Ferlach in 1910 and opened his own gun business. But the Great War brought a rapid decline in business. By 1929, they had recovered and grown into a prospering business. In 1935, Franz Sodia died and his son, also named Franz, took over the business. In 1942, after Austria united with Germany, the Sodia factory was converted to war production. After Germany’s surrender in 1945, local partisans occupied the factory after the British occupied Ferlach. The British commandant, who was a dedicated hunter and gun lover, gave the Ferlach gun makers to make shotguns, unlike the Russian occupiers who destroyed all the major gun making centers throughout Germany behind the Iron Curtain. Very few companies in the world produced such a magnitude of hunting models, from the popular side-by-side guns to the big bore guns for hunting in Africa.

This shotgun is beautifully engraved with pictures of game: two deer on the left side of the frame and a pair of game birds on the right. Each of the barrels is marked on top with the signature of Friedrich Krupp, the top German steel manufacturer at this time. Proof marks found under the barrels. Serial number “19” matches throughout. The left side of the stock features a cheek rest. The engraving on the frame are absolutely first class.

The overall condition is very good. 70% of the blue finish remains on the barrels. The markings and engravings are clear. The numbers match. The walnut stock shows use yet remains in very nice condition. The bores are mostly clean and smooth with the exception of some pitting just outside the chambers. The actions are excellent.
