The FN Self-Loading Police is one of the best shotguns available in todays market. Originally introduced in 2008, the SLP’s advanced design and high level of performance earned it the title of 2009 Shotgun of the Year by the American Rifleman magazine. The SLP uses the Active Valve gas system. This system, created by the Browning Arms Co. (which FN owns), is a form of self-adjusting gas system. When shooting light loads (i.e. 2-3/4” shells), most of the gases are diverted to operate the action. With more powerful magnum loads (i.e. 3” shells), only the minimum amount of gas necessary to operate the action is used, the remaining gases being vented through the Active Valve itself and out the top of the forearm away from the action (and away from the shooter’s face). This system prevents combustion gases from fouling the chamber. It also has the benefit of reducing felt recoil, eliminating the need for fancy recoil dampers, special pads, and other gimmicky modifications.
