Fox Sterlingworth 16 Gauge - MODERN DIMENSIONS, FACTORY ORIGINAL, VFI CERTIFIED, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Fox, Year 1939, 16 Gauge, 6lb 7oz, Chokes .013/ .034 LM/F, LOP 14 1/4", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 1/2" Serial Number: 375964 THE A.H. FOX 16 GAUGE STERLINGWORTH---THE BEST VALUE IN THE VINTAGE AMERICAN DOUBLEGUN WORLD, BAR NONE! Why such a bold claim? First, all A.H. Fox 16-gauge guns are built on the 20-gauge frame, providing light weight, superbly balanced guns that outshine the other American makers. The Fox 16ga. gun typically weighs from 5 ¾ lbs. to 6 1/4lbs. If you examine Parker, L.C. Smith, Ithaca, Lefever, or Winchester Model 21 guns in 16ga. they typically weigh at least a 1/2lb. heavier. Second, the Fox Sterlingworth is the same gun mechanically as all other grades of the A.H. Fox gun, having the fewest parts and smallest action of any of its competitors. The Fox gun mechanism is utterly reliable, the locking mechanism simple and efficient, the barrels and action made of the finest steels of its time, the wood finely fitted to the action, checkering well cut, and the balance of the gun was superb. Third, because they made a lot of them, the price is very affordable. With so many of them out there, how do you know which one to buy? Condition is important, and many of the Sterlingworth guns were used hard and not well maintained. IT IS EASY TO BUY THE WRONG GUN WITH COSTLY ISSUES. At Vintage Firearms, Inc. (VFI) we inspect each gun before purchase, our 4 gunsmiths clean and service each gun as needed, and on most guns, we strip the actions to the smallest parts, Ultrasonic clean and scrub all parts to shiny metal, inspect all parts for integrity and function, make any replacements or repairs necessary, lubricate and reassemble, providing VFI CERTIFIED GUNS, a $275 service in our shop. VFI CERTIFIED GUNS have a 90-day mechanical warranty providing confidence you are buying a fine shotgun that will provide years of service in the field. NONE of the other sellers provide this service. This gun comes with 2 3/4" factory chambers. Modern chamber dimensions and long forcing cones make for safe shooting with softer recoil and better patterns, which benefit the shooter and preserve the integrity of these fine older doubleguns. Other important factors are condition of the metal, screws, wood, and bores. We provide the most comprehensive photography and specifications in the marketplace, information that allows you to make a good choice. Just remember, nowhere is it more apparent than in the gun world…you get what you pay for! If you want an upland gun you can rely on, buy one that is field ready and can safely shoot modern, available field loads. This Sterlingworth, sn 375964 has about 50% factory original case color with an area of vivid color near the lever, the action exhibits the commonly seen soft gray at the balance point. This vintage double has contemporary modern stock dimensions of 14 1/4"x 2 5/8"x 1 1/2" with a neutral cast, this gun has great balance. It is fitted with the bullnose style forend and factory hard rubber buttpad, the screws are perfect and correctly clocked. This Sterlingworth has furniture of above average figure with an almost abstract wave like grain on the stock and is in great shape with just a few field marks, the hand cut checkering at wrist and splinter is in excellent condition. The Barrels show about 97% blue with excellent bores, the 28" barrels have factory original extended cones and are choked LM/F. The action is tight and to way right of center and closes with a vault like lock up. This gun is an ideal choice for just about any upland hunt. Weighing 6lb 7oz with a light #3 contour barrel that weighs a few ounces lighter than the factory standard #3 weight, the gun carries beautifully and would be an ideal companion for long treks through upland country, yet by virtue of its 16-gauge bores it punches well above its weight class. Why carry a 12 gauge when a 16 that weighs the same as a 20 will do the work equally well! A Sterlingworth double with such great features and VFI certified for 90 days make this the double gun to own, buy with confidence. Enjoy.
