A.H. Fox DE 20 Gauge – 1913, 30” BARRELS, 1 OF 54 MADE, UNTOUCHED, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Fox, Year 1913, 20 Gauge, 6lbs 2oz, Chokes M/F, LOP 13 7/8", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: 200108 In the world of vintage American double guns, Ansley H. Fox produced the finest small-bore shotguns of all the known makers. The smallest and most graceful frame, the simplest but most effective mechanics, and beautiful classic engraving and checkering patterns, the Fox 20 ga. was truly scaled with no parts taken from the 12ga. production the way other makers chose to economize. TODAY WE PRESENT A TRUE TREASURE, AN ORIGINAL A.H. FOX DE GRADE 20 GAUGE THAT SHIPPED IN 1913 AND REMAINS IN REMARKABLE, UNTOUCHED, FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION! The factory records show the gun was shipped with a straight stock measuring 14” lop with 2 ½” drop at heel and 1 ½” drop at comb, 30” number 3 weight barrels with factory 3” chambers choked F/F, ejectors, double triggers, and delivered to Ellery Arms Co. of San Francisco California. The DE Grade was essentially Ansley Fox’s highest grade production gun, with only the FE Grade surpassing the DE in decoration and produced in tiny numbers (only 6 twenty-gauge F Grades produced and rarely offered for sale). There is much written about this very gun which is prominently noted by Michael McIntosh on page 141 of his book “A.H. Fox, The Finest Gun in the World”, and written about in the Double Gun Journal by the most advanced Fox collector, Tom Kidd. IF you are fortunate to own a set of Double Gun Journals, please refer to Volume 1, Spring issue, pages 84-86, and Volume 3, Issue 1, page 36, for in depth articles featuring serial number 200108. Upon reviewing the photographs and the specifications in the tables below, you will note that the gun is in factory original condition with two minor exceptions; the stock has been cut and a vintage Silvers pad added long ago, and the right barrel choke has been opened to modified choke. The choke alteration makes this gun far more useful in the field and on the sporting clays course, so should not be a negative for most Fox enthusiasts. This gun weighs 6lbs. 1oz. and the pad will offer comfort when shooting heavy hunting loads or for longer sessions at the clays course. The pad is fitting for the gun and perfectly installed. The barrels are tight on the hinge pin and breech face with excellent bores, factory bore diameter, 32 thou as the minimum wall thickness in either barrel, tight ribs, clear sharp stampings and engraving, and retaining 95% original but thinning factory blue. The action is covered in early style DE engraving with beautifully executed scroll, borders, and game scenes. The mechanics are excellent with crisp triggers, strong well-timed ejectors, top lever right of center, and perfect, well-timed screws that appear untouched. The factory original, highly figured Circassian Walnut retains most all its original factory finish, has perfect wood-to-metal fit, no cracks, splits, chips, or repairs, and the checkering shows just minor wear from 109 years of careful use. THIS IS A NO EXCUSE GUN…EVERYTHING THAT AN EXPERT LOOKS FOR AS POSITIVES ARE HERE, AND NONE OF THE NEGATIVES. THIS IS THE WAY YOU WANT TO FIND A RARE AND DESIRABLE, INVESTMENT QUALITY FOX SHOTGUN. There are few opportunities in a lifetime to acquire such a fine Fox, with modern stock dimensions, delightful weight and balance, known history, and a supreme upland gun that still deserves its days in the field and to be shot frequently at the sporting clays course with your fellow shooting friends. IF you are going to have one piece in your collection that epitomizes the best of the American gunmaking industry from the turn of the 20th Century, this is the piece. The only thing this gun may need is a custom fitted vintage leather case that we can put together for the next owner within 8 weeks of purchase.
