A.H. Fox Philadelphia Sterlingworth 12 Gauge, 30” Barrels, Mfg 1920, Restored
Description: This A.H. Fox Sterlingworth 12 gauge shotgun, serial number 89566, was manufactured in 1920 in Philadelphia. It has 30” barrels choked Improved Cylinder (.010) and Improved Modified (.025). The lettering on the top of the barrels is crisp and the bores are bright. The wall thickness for the right barrel (top/side/bottom) at 9” from muzzle is 036/.037/.035 and at the middle of the barrel is .040/.035/.032; the left barrel is .040/.035/.034 and .038/.034/.034, respectively. Bores 9” from the breech are .725/.725 respectively. The chambers are 2-3/4” with elongated forcing cones. The drop at the comb is 1-3/4” and at the heel 2-3/4”. Length of pull from the front trigger to the end of the butt plate is 14-1/4”. The weight is 7 lbs 7 ounces. The gun locks up tight and on face; the top lever returns to the right of center. The stock is cast off 1/8 inch. All serial numbers match. This vintage shotgun is properly restored to bring it back to a condition similar to what it would have been after a few years of use by the original owner. Layers of old lacquer on the stock and the forearm were removed, checkering was re-cut, dents and scratches removed to the degree possible while preserving the character of the gun, and multiple coats of stock oil finish applied. The preparation of the action and forearm metal to be re-case-hardened and the barrels to be re-blued was entirely by hand. Color case hardening was done by Classic Guns in Crete, IL. The barrels were re-blued using the slow rust blue process. At some point in the gun's history, the left wing had a plug professionally inserted, most likely to strengthen this portion of the stock, which is noticeable only if one is looking for it. The beavertail forearm is a modern replacement. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt by buyer. This guns has been used to shoot sporting clays at vintage side-by-side events on a number of occasions using standard factory 2-3/4” target loads. However, as for any vintage shotgun, and especially one almost a hundred years old, it is recommended that the new owner have it inspected by a professional gunsmith before firing. The gun carries a 30-day warrantee, during which Back in Time will have any mechanical problems documented by a professional gunsmith repaired or accept the return of the gun and refund the price of the gun and the return shipping cost. The listed price does not include shipping costs paid by buyer.
