Fox B Grade 12 Gauge – 1906, SERIAL NUMBER 65, GREAT GUN, 30”, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Fox, Year 1906, 12 Gauge, 7lbs, Chokes M/F, LOP 13 3/4", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 5/8" Serial Number: 65 Ansley H. Fox opened the doors of the A.H. Fox Gun Co. in Philadelphia Pennsylvania sometime in 1906 after closing out the Philadelphia Arms Co. at about the same time. The early Fox guns were completed under the micro-management of old Ansley himself, and I believe his earliest guns were the very best. It is most noticeable when you disassemble a gun like this B Grade, as the parts are all finely polished and well finished compared to guns 10 years later. This early Fox B Grade, serial number 65 built in 1906, is a perfect example of the quality that went into the early Fox guns. French walnut stocks nicely figured both sides, original checkering showing no wear, and the unique early style, finely cut English scroll engraving (different from the well-known “early B” engraving) demonstrate a simple elegance in Ansley’s grade 2 gun. I HAVE BEEN CHASING FOX GUNS FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS AND THIS IS THE EARLIEST, 2 DIGIT SERIAL NUMBERED GUN I HAVE WITNESSED, A FACT IMPORTANT IN THE COLLECTING WORLD. Even the safety button and triggers are noticeably more finely sculpted and shaped than later guns. This gun has all the original factory parts intact and the all metal parts (action, barrels, trigger guard) are factory original finishes, with 97% blue on the barrels, 90% case color on the action (turning patina but all there), and 60% trigger guard blue turning brown. The factory original wood has been restored sometime long ago. The screws, wood-to-metal fit, and mechanics are all near perfect on this 116-year-old Fox. The triggers are super crisp, barrels are tight on the breech face and hinge pin with lever right of center, the ribs are tight on the 30” Krupp steel “HEAVY WEIGHT” barrels (stampings on bottom of barrels state “heavy weight”…they weigh out like #2 weight barrels), the bores are excellent. THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN, ACTION STRIPPED TO THE SMALLEST PART, ALL CLEANED IN THE ULTRASONIC CLEANER, SCRUBBED TO BARE METAL, ALL PARTS INSPECTED FOR FUNCTION AND INTEGRITY, LUBRICATED, AND REASSEMBLED, READY FOR SERIOUS USE FOR DECADES TO COME. VFI Certified guns have a 90-day mechanical warranty. We did open the chambers to 2 ¾” and lengthened the forcing cones to 1 ½” tapers (a $360 service in our shop) which allows the use of commonly available shotgun shells, reduces felt recoil to shooter and gun, and provides optimum patterns for increased lethality on game and targets. This service is completed with full attention to barrel wall thickness at the end of the chamber and safety of shooting modern, moderate loads. There is nothing needed to do to this Fox to use as intended for generations to come…it is all done. This Fox B Grade is a serious and solid double gun ready for heavy use in the field and/or for volumes of clay targets. The barrels and bores are awesome, there are no cracks or repairs to the wood, and the gun is tight as new. NOT A SAFE QUEEN! See specifications in the tables below. The bore diameter is unaltered at .730” diameter, minimum barrel wall thickness 34 thou, all just as shipped. Any serious Fox collector should respect and admire this fine early B Grade Fox and consider it a very strong investment quality Philly Fox. My guess is this gun will not take long to sell, so don’t hesitate or a very rare opportunity will slip away. Thanks for looking!
