Fox BE 16 Gauge – RARE!, 1 OF 20, ENGLISH STOCK, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Fox, Year 1915, 16 Gauge, 6lbs 7oz, Chokes SK/F, LOP 14 1/8", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 11/16" Serial Number: 300473 I am a collector of Fox shotguns. Simply put, I favor them over all other Classic American Doubles. Most double-gunners reading this ad are aware that Ansley H. Fox hit a home run when he released his Fox guns in 20ga. and 16ga. in 1912. Building both guns on the 20ga. frame, he came up with the finest 16 bore made in America when looking at weight, balance, and simplicity of the action and its mechanisms. You will see the word “RARE” used by guys trying to sell their guns. Most of the time it is simply a word. The gun is not rare at all. The B Grade Fox 16ga., cataloged for only 6 years, is one that actually is “RARE”. Small bore guns were not produced until 1912, and the B Grade was discontinued in the catalog offerings in 1918, with only 186 sixteen-gauge guns ever produced. When you estimate that 15% may have left planet Earth due to damage and loss, there are likely only 160 or so in existence and many of those have been badly altered. Of the 160 remaining less than 20 or so have English style stocks, with only about 12 of those having ejectors. THAT IS RARE! In all the years spent and all the laps around the country that I have done in search of quality American double shotguns, I have only seen about 10 Fox B Grade 16ga. guns. This gun, sn300473 made in 1915, retains 85% factory original case color (fading). The engraving is exceptionally deep cut almost to the point of being deep-relief style and it is all clear and sharp. ALL PARTS ARE ORIGINAL TO THE GUN except maybe the pad. The factory order card identifies the gun exactly the way it is now, including specifying the stock to be of “dark walnut”, ejectors, straight stock, 28” barrels choked Cylinder and Full. The barrels and trigger guard have been expertly reblued, the wood has been restored to perfection, wood-to-metal fit is superb, checkering is awesome. Weighing 6lbs. 7oz. and balanced perfectly just ahead of the hinge pin, it is the epitome of a fine handling bird gun. With mirror bright bores, 28" number 3 weight Krupp steel barrels choked SK/F, this is the perfect upland gun and vintage clays gun. The shooting public has fallen in love with the Fox 16, and the beautiful floral engraving with birds on the bottom captured in the late B Style engraving is very attractive. A great gun that will hold its value and be one of your treasured vintage "go to" guns, it will be a wise investment in your shooting pleasures. You will not likely have another opportunity to own such a rare Fox gun that is so perfect for today’s upland game. Thanks for looking.
