Fox Sterlingworth 20 Gauge – 30” BARRELS, 6LBS., 100% NEW, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Fox, Year 1913, 20 Gauge, 6lbs 2oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 14 1/8", DAH 2 13/16", DAC 1 7/16" Serial Number: 250314 Most will agree the Fox Sterlingworth 20ga. is the best value for a small gauge vintage American double in today's marketplace. Built on a tiny 20ga. frame, therefore lighter than like guns from Parker, L.C. Smith, or Ithaca, they are dynamically balanced, delightful little guns. The Sterlingworth is still an affordable field and clays gun with the handling and shooting characteristics of a much more expensive gun. Just try and find a decent Fox 20ga. gun with 30” barrels in any grade. There are few offered for sale, and for good reason. First, they made very few with the highly desirable 30” barrels. Second, the A.H. Fox 20 bore has been described as the “most perfectly proportioned 20ga.” boxlock ever made and it likely is true. Those that own them have no intention of selling them. I have a treasure here; a 1913 Sterlingworth 20 gauge, sn250314, the 314th produced in the era Fox made its best guns, shipped from the factory with the 30” barrels AND IT IS IN 100% AS NEW CONDITION, HAVING BEEN COMPLETELY RESTORED BY VFI. The gun was solid when we got her, but mostly grey. We spared no expense and kept to historically correct Fox finishes. In 1913 A.H. Fox was still using bone and charcoal case color, so we utilized TURNBULL RESTORATIONS for the case color and charcoal blue on the trigger guard and forend iron. The stock has a Truoil hand-rubbed finish that was done to the lower grade Sterlingworth standards to keep it authentic. Pores are slightly evident in the finish, and purposely so. The #3 weight barrels have tight ribs, mirror bores, clear, sharp lettering and rib matting, and fit tight to the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun. We lengthened the chambers to 2 ¾” and extended the forcing cones to 1 ½” tapers (a $360 service in our shop) as we know this gun is going to be used and this service reduces recoil to the stock and provides better patterns. The action has distinct engraving, lettering, perfect screws, crisp trigger pulls, and the top lever is well right of center. The action was stripped to the smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned, inspected, and lubricated properly making this a VFI CERTIFIED GUNS with a 90-day mechanical warranty. This is a $325 service that gives you confidence in the mechanics of your vintage Fox. Who else offers that?!!! There isn’t a better way to buy a 108-year-old gun than buying a VFI CERTIFIED gun. Weighing 6lbs. 2oz. and balanced perfectly between the hands, it is a delightful little bird gun that will appeal to the collector, the upland hunter, and the vintage clays gunners. She even has great modern shooting dimensions without the usual 3” drop, AND THAT IS AN EXTREMELY RARE OCCURRENCE IN A STERLINGWORTH! Most are aware that a full restoration is costly and takes over a year to have done. This one is ready now and for about the same cost as the full restoration! Fox 20ga. guns continue to grow in value as fewer and fewer are available to purchase. A great investment opportunity and delightful gun for your upland bird season. Thanks for looking.
