The Franchi 2005 was developed in the late 1980s and into the 1990s as part of Franchi’s effort to compete in the premium sporting and trap shotgun market, particularly against Italian heavyweights like Perazzi and Beretta. Franchi, long known for their semi-auto shotguns, wanted to show they could also build world-class over/unders and dedicated competition guns.

The Franchi 2005 was their flagship trap and sporting combo, designed with serious competitive shooters in mind. It came typically in a combo setup: an unsingle barrel (for singles and handicap) and an over/under barrel (for doubles), sharing the same receiver and stock. The model emphasized:
