1890 W.W. Greener Boxlock SXS 12 Gauge 27" Barrel - Excellent Older Refinish

Description:
History
The 1890 W.W. Greener boxlock side-by-side (SXS) shotgun represents the pinnacle of late 19th-century British gunmaking. At this time, William Wellington Greener was operating the largest sporting gun factory in Britain. These shotguns are renowned for their highly durable boxlock mechanisms, legendary cross-bolt lockup, and historical ties to the golden age of live pigeon and game shooting.

Key Historical & Technical Features
  • The "Facile Princeps" Action: Patented by Greener in 1880, this boxlock mechanism was designed to compete with the famous Anson & Deeley patents. It used a hook on the barrel lump to cock the tumblers. It earned its name—meaning "easily the best"—because of its simplicity, reliability, and robust nature.
  • Greener Cross-Bolt: Invented in 1867, this hallmark feature is a transverse bolt that passes through the action and the rib extension of the barrels. It created one of the strongest lockups of any break-open shotgun in history, weight-for-weight.
  • Choke Boring: Greener was a pioneer in popularizing choked barrels, which dramatically improved shot patterns. He won numerous prestigious The Field shotgun trials in the 1870s and 1880s due to this technology.
  • Proof Marks: Shotguns manufactured around 1890 will feature late-19th-century British black powder proof stamps. Later examples may have been retrofitted with nitro-proof marks, but many from 1890 should strictly shoot low-pressure or black powder shells
Identifying Specific Grades and Values
Greener produced a wide range of grades during this era, from field-grade working guns (like the Empire and G-models) to incredibly ornate exhibition pieces (like the St. George and Imperial grades). Values can vary wildly—ranging from roughly $1,500 for a standard field gun in shootable condition, up to tens of thousands of dollars for highly engraved, high-grade collector pieces.

To trace the exact history, original build date, and factory grade of a specific 1890-era Greener, you will need the serial number (typically found on the water table of the barrels or bottom of the receiver).

Condition
Excellent older professional refinish.  No chips or splits in the furniture.  Bluing is excellent.  Rib markings “W.W. GREENER, 68 HAYMARKET, LONDON”  and “WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS 1875, 1877, 1878, 1879” — reflecting Greener’s dominance in field trials during that period.  The fit is tight and the gun is solid.  The buttpad is not original.  Fixed chokes are Mod & IC.  Handles 2 1/2" 12 gauge shells.
