CRYSTAL PALACE Engraved GREENER Antique DB SxS PRESENTATION GRADE Shotgun
INDESTRUCTIBLE by GUN POWDER No. 1 EXPOSITION. 1851
Description: CRYSTAL PALACE Engraved GREENER Antique DB SxS PRESENTATION GRADE Shotgun INDESTRUCTIBLE by GUN POWDER No. 1 EXPOSITION. 1851 Here we present an antique Factory Engraved Presentation Grade W. W. Greener Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Hammer Shotgun, manufactured circa 1851 in Birmingham, England, and made for the 1851 International Exposition at the Crystal Palace London. This example is from the Norman R. Blank Collection and the collection papers note that it was “made for 1851 International Exposition. Crystal Palace London.” It was purchased by Blank through W. Keith Neal in February 1962. Another of these shotguns is in the Royal Armouries’ Self Defense Gallery in Leeds (serial number 4236, object number: XII.5215). The Royal Armouries note their example as “one of his Presentation Grade shotguns, the finest of the five grades Greener manufactured.” William Greener won two gold medals and a diploma at the first World’s Fair in 1851 (The Great Exhibition). He also won awards at subsequent exhibitions, and a “No. 3 EXHIBITION NEW YORK 1853” shotgun example is known. William W. Greener was a member of the second generation family which had been involved with gunmaking from 1829 to the present day. Greener served his apprenticeship with John Gardner in Newcastle prior to working for Joe Manton, who was probably the best gunmaker in England in the early 1800s. In 1829 he set up his own shop in Newcastle making percussion muzzle loading sporting and military shotguns and rifles, as well as harpoon guns for the Dundee Whalers. However, he found it difficult to obtain the best materials, so he moved to Birmingham in 1844 where Greener Gunmaking has remained ever since. The barrel rib has “WILLIAM. GREENER’S, LAMINATED STEEL. INDESTRUCTIBLE BY GUNPOWDER. NO. 1 EXPOSITION 1851.” in inlay. The wrist escutcheon has a crest of a pelican vulning over a torse. The overall condition is very good. The stock has minimal evidence of handling. A nice brown patina as settled over the Damascus barrels. The bores are shiny bright while dimming slightly toward the muzzles. The action is robust. Nicely preserved checkering. Stable grain split on the front of the forend. Silver inlaid barrel rib. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels: 27-7/8 inches. Caliber: 12 Gauge Length of Pull: 14-1/2 inches Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
