Charles Boswell 16 Bore Hammergun - Rare
Description: Early Charles Boswell 16 bore hammergun made circa 1883 - 87. Boswell, one of the trade’s legendary makers was known for the high quality of his work and his guns are much sought after today. This one has TIG invisibly sleeved barrels and a replacement stock so it is very shootable. Rebounding hammers and extractors. The lockplates are inscribed “Chas Boswell” and the action has around 33% floral coverage engraving. It has an elegant narrow toplever and top strap. Weight is 6lb 2oz. *** The TIG sleeved nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” cartridges. The welding job is superb as you cannot make out the seam unless you look hard for it in direct sunlight. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave game style rib on which is inscribed: “Charles Boswell, Maker. 126 Strand, London, W.C.” The bluing on the barrels is bright and shiny as are the bores. The right barrel is bored 0.660 with a constriction of 0.012 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. The left barrel is also bored 0.660 and has a constriction of 0.032 for Fufl choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.033. Nitro proofed for 2-1/2” shotshell for 3 tons in Birmingham. *** The straight grip replacement stock is made of nicely figured European walnut and sports modern dimensions. The forearm wood appears to be original with an ebony forearm tip which shows a little wear. Checkering on both is good with a little sign of wear. The length of pull is 14-1/4” to a checkered butt with heel and toe clips by 1-1/2" by 2". Cast off for the righthand shot. There is a blank initial plate on the bottom of the stock. *** Sixteen gauges are fairly rare in British guns and this Boswell has been refurbished to a shootable condition with the addition of sleeved barrels and a replacement stock with shootable dimensions. It is tight on face and mechanically sound. The gun does show some wear on the metal finishes and some handling marks on the wood. Great gun for the sophisticated upland gunner and Vintage shooter. Won’t last long *** Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance and related charges. I give a three-day non-firing inspection and will only accept returns if gun is not as described. *** Come and see this great double and other fine shotguns at the MacNab booth at the Southern Side-by-Side Championship & Exhibition on April 24th – 27th at Deep River Sporting Clays in Sanford, NC. *** Antique: Yes Price: $3,795.00 Contact Seller |
