Hopkins & Allen Arms Co., Hammer Boxlock, 12 ga
Description: Offered here is a Hopkins & Allen boxlock hammer gun in very good condition with 30” fluid steel barrels bored full and modified. It is high condition gun considering its 100-year-old age and model. Not many of these century old work horse guns survive in this condition. It is mechanically sound, locks-up tight, has good clean bores and the locks are crisp. It looks like original varnish on the stock, but the checkering has been recut. The barrel blue in very good but looks to have been toughed up. This gun was first made in 1896 by Forehand Arms Co., Worchester, Mass. until it went bankrupt in 1902 and was acquired by the Hopkins & Allen. It is based on a design by Martin Bye. H&A was a pistol maker whose plant burned down in 1892. That company took the insurance money and bought Forehand. Forehand Arms had was producing this boxlock hammer gun and a hammerless model known as the “1895” also designed by Martin Bye. Forehand Arms, successor to Forehand & Wardsworth which was successor to Ethen Allen & Co., also produced an 1890 model designed by Bye. H&A produce both hammer and hammerless models under the Forehand name for a short time before some minor changes were made and the guns marked as H&A until discontinued about 1917.
