John Blanch Barlock 12 Bore Hammergun with 30” Nitro Damascus Barrels 2-3/4” and Beautiful French Walnut Stock

Description:
Handsome and very nice handling Blanch hammergun with highly figured 12 bore nitro Damascus barrels that have been reproved for 2-3/4” shotshells. The Blanch records were destroyed during the Blitz in WWII so we estimate that Blanch number 4587 was made circa 1875 – 1880. It has obviously been refurbished recently and consequently in surprisingly good condition for its age with sharp profuse engraving and lots of residual case coloring. It has percussion style fences, nicely sculpted non-rebounding hammers, Purdey patent thumbhole opener, and extractors. The finishes on the barrels and forearm are in very good condition. Presented in its leather case with maker’s label. Easy to carry for day afield at 6lb 15oz.

The original 30” highly figured Damascus barrels were reproved in Birmingham for 70mm(2-3/4”) nitro cartridges. The bores exhibit a very few minor pits typical of guns of this era but otherwise the bores are shiny and bright. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave rib on which is inscribed “J. Blanch & Son 20 Gracechurch Street London”. The right barrel is bored 0.730 with a constriction of 0.002 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031. The left barrel is also bored 0.730 and has a constrtiction of 0.002 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030. The barrels of guns from this era were generally not constricted as choking was a new concept at that time. Do not underestimate the effective pattern that Cylinder produces and at some distance.

The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of beautifully figured French walnut. Checkering is crisp on the stock but the forearm shows wear and a few dents. It has a wedge-style forearm release and uniquely-styled engraved heel and toe plates. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” by 1-5/8” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the righthanded shooter.
