William Powell & Son Bar-in-Wood 12 Bore Hammergun With 29” Nitro Damascus Barrels
Description: Handsome William Powell & Son woodbar hammergun with 29” figured nitro Damascus barrels. Powell no. 7754 was made circa 1883 – 84. It has rebounding hammers that fall below the shooter’s line of sight when cocked. In addition, the barrels may be opened while the hammers are cocked. Anson push rod forearm opener. Some residual case coloring on the sideplates, a rectangular crossbolt, and a top extension on the barrels. Presented in its leather case with maker’s label and brass oil bottle. Weighs 6lb 6oz making it easy to carry for a day afield. The 29” figured Damascus barrels were nitro proofed in Birmingham with bores of 0.724 right and 0.736 left. They have 2-1/2” chambers and are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib. The rib is inscribed “William Powell & Son. 13 Carrs Lane. Birmingham.” The right bore measures 0.723 with a constriction of 0.002 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.024. The left bore measures 0.737 and has a constriction of 0.022 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.022. Typical choking of the era. The straighthand stock and splinter forearm are made of nicely figured European walnut and have recently been refinished in a satin gloss. The checkering has been refreshed and is crisp. Stock dimensions are 14-1/8” including a thin horn buttplate by 1-1/2” by 2-1/4”. Cast-On for the lefthanded shot. A very nice bar-in-wood hammergun from one of the great Birmingham makers. Nice handling, good looking, and at a great price. Please note that the photographs are part of the description. Not for sale where prohibited by state or local laws. Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period which begins when it arrives at the buyer’s FFL or specified address if the gun is classified as an Antique. Returns at buyer’s expense.
