Holland & Holland HAMMER GUN, 2 3/4” LONDON PROOFED, 99%, vintage firearms
Description: General Specs: Holland & Holland, c1891, 12 Gauge, 6lbs. 10oz., Chokes IC/M, LOP 14 11/16", DAH 2 3/8", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: 14070 If you want to start a vigorous debate, ask a group of experienced double gun enthusiasts “what maker builds the finest double shotgun in the world?”. There will be a variety of educated opinions with vigorous defenders, but Holland & Holland will be included in the debate. Building fine sporting arms since 1856, there is little doubt that H & H will always land in the top 5 BEST GUN makers in the world. Here we have a unique offering; a Holland and Holland bar action hammer gun circa 1891, modern London proofed in 2010 for 2 ¾” magnum loads, wonderfully restored in England to new condition by Toby Barclay of Heritage Guns. Review the photos and you will find a truly stunning gun, factory engraved with the most delicate yet elaborate scroll, still sharp and clear demonstrating the quality of work at the height of the Victorian era…most would argue there is no finer example of the gunmaker’s art then in this time period. This gun has been perfectly and invisibly sleeved in England; the only sign of this upgrade is the stamping on the barrel flats. Now proofed for modern heavy loads with perfect bores, substantial wall thicknesses, and the finely finished and engraved barrels you would expect on a Holland and Holland Royal, the gun is ready for the upland game fields and vintage sporting clays shoots. The strikingly figured wood was fitted to the action and forend iron to the most exacting London Best standards, with the traditional hand-rubbed oil finish bringing out the deep contrasting grain and profuse fiddleback figure. The wood-to-metal fit is perfect, as is the checkering with fine mullered border. The 30” barrels are choked IC/M, the gun weighs 6lbs. 10oz. and balances ¼” in front of the hinge pin…just enough to keep the gun swinging on crossing targets. Cased in a traditional oak and leather case with accessories and label, the gun displays well and will make a great, functional addition to your quiver of shooting guns. Spend some time looking at the sculpting of the action, the graceful double arcaded fences, the shape of the hammers, and then take note that this action was created before electricity, shaped with file and chisel, by men that apprenticed at 16 years of age and stopped working when their hearts stopped pumping. There are few artisans left on the planet that could duplicate this work. The workmanship in this restoration cannot be flawed and the care the gun has received since leaves the gun as a near new example of one of the world’s finest bar action hammer guns.
