Holland & Holland ~ Royal Sidelock ~ 12 Ga.
Description: This is a pre-owned 1901 Holland & Holland Royal sidelock in 12 gauge (part of a matched pair of consecutively serialized shotguns, serial no. 22609/10). Both weigh in at 6 lbs. 6 oz. and are in excellent condition with appealing patina from years of well-serviced use. The concave ribbed barrels of 30 inches are chambered for 2 1/2 inch shells, bored approx. true cyl. in all, (right wall thickness at 20 in both). Top levers gold-inlaid '1' and '2', automatic safeties with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' details, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, best 'Royal' scroll engraving, brushed bright and renewed finish overall, 14 3/4 inch figured stocks including butt plates. These Royals have double triggers, straight grips, splinter fore-ends. The engraving is beautiful and practical Holland scroll. Still standard embellishment today – and known as 'Royal Scroll' in house. Mechanically, these guns are slightly different to modern Royals. They are not 'self-opening', a feature that arrived only in the 1920s on Holland's bests. Nor do they have hand-detachable locks (introduced in 1908). Nevertheless, still the epitome of the London gun at the pre-First World War period of the British trade. Provenance: The makers have kindly confirmed that this pair was completed in 1901. The name is not recorded. Sold as a pair including a vintage double motor case. 12 Gauge SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Chambers: 2 1/2 Metal Condition: Very good overall with a few small scratches and light wear to the blue on the sides of the barrels near the breech and the muzzle Wood Condition: Good overall condition with some handling wear and a small chip at the front of the fore end Bore Condition: Clean and bright Barrels: 30 Triggers: Double triggers Stock Dimensions: 14 3/4" LOP ~ 1 1/2" DAC ~ 1 7/8" DAH Fore End: Splinter fore end Butt Pad: Grooved Ebonite plate Weight: 6 lbs. 6 oz.
