Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Engraved I. Hollis & Sons Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Shotgun made circa the early 1860s to the early 1870s in London, England. Isaac Hollis & Sons started out in the early part of the 19th century with the name of “Hollis Brothers”. It continued under that trade name until 1845 when it was re-named “Hollis Brothers & Co. which continued until 1848, when it became “Hollis & Sheath” after Isaac took on Isaac Brentnall Sheath as a partner. This continued until 1861 when the firm changed its name to I. Hollis & Sons on the departure of Sheath.

Hollis & Sons became known as a supplier of pistols and shotguns and also produced muskets that was possibly used for the North American Indian trade. From hunting large game to battles between European Americans and Native Americans, this shotgun was built to be a rugged, powerful long arm through the tumultuous 19th century. This gun would have also been used to put food on the table or defend the homestead against unwanted intruders with its massive 10 gauge bore.

The overall condition is good. This example has been refinished. Smooth, brown and gray patinas. Strong actions. Both bores contains some shimmer but have dimmed, and remain smooth. Fine stock, sharp wrist and forend checkering, with a smooth varnish. A thin crack is present just behind the right lock. Markings are legible. Both locks are lightly engraved with floral designs. Silver inlaid breech bands.
