Ithaca NID Grade 5E 20 Gauge – RARE! 1 of 20 MADE, 98% CONDITION, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1926, 20 Gauge, 6lbs 3oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 13 3/4", DAH 2 7/8", DAC 1 5/8" Serial Number: 435837 The Ithaca NID (New Ithaca Double) was the last version of side by side shotgun produced by Ithaca between 1926 (the end of the Flues Model) and 1949 when all Ithaca double guns were discontinued. The NID action was, by design, the strongest action of all the double gun makers, second in strength only to the latecomer from Winchester, the Model 21. The action had less steel cut out for the working parts, and the rotary bolt was robust and positive. Ithaca Gun Co. gave you more for your money per grade than all the other double gun makers, ie fancier wood figure and checkering patterns, and gorgeous engraving. Fit and finish on the Ithaca NID left nothing to be desired. Walt Snyder wrote the definitive book on Ithaca guns, “Ithaca Gun Company, From the Beginning”, where he notes that the total production for the Ithaca NID Grade 5 guns was 155 guns, most of them being 12ga. When Walt was the keeper of the Ithaca records (Walt retired a few years or so ago) he provided a factory letter for a different Ithaca NID Grade 5E 20ga. that I had at the time and he noted that there were likely only 15-20 Grade 5E 20ga. guns ever produced…A RARE GUN INDEED. This particular gun, sn435837 produced in 1926, is RARER YET, AS IT IS A 98% FACTORY ORIGINAL GUN IN UNTOUCHED CONDITION, ONE OF THE BEST ON THE PLANET. The stock is gorgeous 3X American feather-crotch walnut, the checkering is like new with elaborate ribbons and flor-de-lis carvings, with a perfect finish and no cracks or repairs. The l forend has the ebony inlay at the forend tip, again with perfect finish and factory checkering. ALL OF THE FINISHES ARE FACTORY ORIGINAL, WITH 99% BLUE, 95% CASE COLOR, 99% CHARCOAL BLUE ON THE TRIGGER GUARD, AND ALL THE ORIGINAL FINISH ON THE WOOD. The barrel flats and breech face still have the factory jeweling. The action is beautifully engraved with a vine and foliate pattern with stippled background shading, a silver inlaid woodcock on the right, a proud eagle on the bottom, and a silver inlaid pheasant on the left. The screws are all excellent and the mechanics are perfect. The best thing about this high-grade Ithaca is that there is just enough honest wear on the gun that you will not feel out of place shooting the gun at clays or upland game. The gun is one of the great finds in American side x side shotguns with extreme rarity, very useful features, spectacular aesthetics, and a mechanically stout gun that can continue to deliver top performance for decades and generations to come. This gun had an Ithaca Sunburst pad on it when we got the gun, which did not come into use until 1930 or thereabouts. We put an Ithaca NID buttplate on the gun. The LOP with the Sunburst pad is 14 5/8”, so if you want a longer LOP we can install a pad for you and we can also bend the stock to your dimensions if needed. This is the perfect example of an investment quality shotgun that has it all that can be used and enjoyed while increasing in value. This is a rare opportunity. Don’t hesitate or she will be gone.
