L.C. Smith 4E 12 Gauge – FACTORY 2 BARRELS, RARE vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1902, 12 Gauge, 1=7lbs 7oz; #2=7lbs 4oz, Chokes 1=LM/F 2=SK/IC+, LOP 13.5" from rear trigger, DAH 2 1/2", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: 9414 The Grade 4E is one of the hardest of the L.C. Smith guns to find, with only 438 produced in 12ga. This beautiful Elsie, sn9414 made in 1902, is in untouched factory condition with 90% factory case color covering the receiver (though faded and faint, it is clearly 90% coverage) 98% factory blue on the barrels, trigger guard still showing over 40% original charcoal blue, and what looks to be 95% of the original wood finish. This gun was definitively produced as a factory 2-barrel set, of which only 9 such guns show in the factory records. A VERY RARE GUN INDEED! Likely engraved by Albert Kraus, it is the early style 4E engraving with the vignette of the dogs in an oval toward the rear of the lock plates. Very few were made with this engraving layout. Just look at the delicate detail in the dog’s anatomy and the landscape surrounding the dogs, as well as the perfect, fine English scroll and borders surrounding this gun’s frame…awesome! The 4E also has beaded fences hand filed into the frame behind the breech balls and the top of the action is gracefully sculpted. The end of the forend iron is also hand shaped and filed with raised beads. The trigger guard bow has another game scene vignette with two detailed quail in a grassy scene. The Grade 4E L.C. Smith is a notably crafted gun. Best of all, the gun is UNTOUCHED SINCE LEAVING THE FACTORY, with exception of barrel set #1 having been reblued sometime long ago. The wood, checkering, case color, screws, trigger guard, buttplate, bores, and barrels set #2 are all in excellent condition and retain original finishes from the factory. Barrel set #1 is 30” and choked LM/F, barrel set #2 is 28” SK/LM, making for a perfect combination of chokes for upland birds or clays. Both sets of barrels are tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face and both have tight ribs. The mechanics, including the Hunter One trigger, are in perfect working order with strong, well-timed ejectors. The stock dimensions are modern and there are no cracks or repairs to the wood. We have custom-fit a canvas and leather case to this set so that all the wear points are protected by heavy leather and there can be no movement of the gun or parts within the case. The case is outfitted with a leather L.C. Smith trade label and all the usual accessories. There is a letter documenting the gun that will be included in this package. Collecting L.C. Smith pre-1913 guns has been my passion for over 25 years, and this is the first high condition Grade 4 I have had in 10 years. It is a rare opportunity when one comes up for sale that has no excuses, so do not hesitate on this one! What a great investment opportunity in a gun that is the epitome of fine L.C. Smith gunmaking.
