1927 Vintage L.C. Smith Crown Grade 12 Gauge Double Barrel Trap Gun w/ 32" Inch Barrels & Factory Letter
** Rare & Beautiful! **
Description: Here is a beautiful and rare L.C. Smith Crown Grade 12 gauge side by side shotgun made for shooting trap. The Crown Grade model from L.C. Smith was one of their top-of-the-line models, each gun totally custom-made to order. First introduced in 1913, L.C. Smith offered the Crown Grade until 1950. During that entire 37 year production run there was only a total of 890 Crown Grades made, an average of 24 guns per year. Despite the Crown Grade being offered in 10 ga., 12 ga., 16 ga., 20 ga., and .410 gauge, almost 75% of the total production was in 12 gauge (644 out of 890). This was THE flagship of the L.C. Smith/Hunter Arms shotgun line, typically only ordered by the wealthy or the most demanding of shooters. In 1913 when the Crown Grade was introduced prices started at $157.00 dollars, which equates to $4240.00 dollars in today's money. This particular example was made in 1927 just prior to the Great Depression and would have cost right at $295.00 in this configuration, a cost of $4342.00 dollars in today's money. This beautiful Crown Grade features a fully-engraved case-colored receiver, a set of 32" inch vent-rib barrels choked "Full" and "Extra Full" with a gloss blue finish, a gold crown inlaid into the top lever, an Ivory mid-bead and Brass-capped Ivory front bead sight, factory automatic ejectors, a "Hunter" single-selective trigger, and a checkered deluxe highly-figured European Walnut stock set consisting of a beavertail forearm and a pistol-grip buttstock with an elevated straight comb. The forearm has a rotary-style release and the buttstock is fit a with a factory black plastic pistol grip cap and a silver initial plate on the keel. At some point in the last 94 years a recoil pad has been fit to the butt making the length of pull 13.5" inches. The condition of this 12 gauge Crown Grade is very good, both inside and out. The original factory gloss-blue finish is still bright and clean on the barrels and triggerguard, showing only very minor wear and no bad spots or eyesores. The bores in both barrels are mirror-bright and in superb condition, free from any pitting, dents, bulges, or visible damage of any kind. The top of the right barrel is engraved with "L.C. Smith Crown Grade", and the top of the left barrel is engraved with "Made to Order By The Hunter Arms Co. Inc. Fulton, N.Y.". The factory matted and ventilated rib is in excellent condition, fully intact and perfectly tight to the barrels. The vent rib starts above the chambers measuring 1/2" inch wide and tapers down in width to 1/4" inch wide at the muzzle. The engraved and case-colored receiver is beautiful. There are only some small areas of original case colors still showing mainly in the protected areas like around the trigger and behind the recoil plates on either side, but the engraving is still sharp and 100% visible everywhere it was applied. The left side of the of the receiver shows lots of fine-line scroll and floral engraving with an oval-shaped game scene consisting of two English Setters on point. The right side of the receiver has the same fine-line floral and scroll engraving with an oval-shaped game scene consisting of two English Pointers on point. As you can see from the pictures, the engraving is a true work of art on this L.C. Smith. The original stock set on this Crown Grade is in excellent condition overall and is very handsome. The forearm and buttstock are a perfect match to each other in every way, from the very beautiful light red-brown color to the degree of wear each piece shows. Both the forearm and buttstock are very solid and free from any major damage, however both pieces show some VERY minor cracks in them. The forearm has two very small cracks at the right rear edge, and the buttstock has two tiny cracks just behind the sideplate, one on each side. None of these cracks spread open or move when torque and various types of pressure are applied to them, they are all still very tight and stable. The buttstock on this Crown Grade is particularly beautiful, showing some amazing figure and color in it that appears 3-D under the clearcoat top finish. The stripes look like they are floating over top of everything else. The factory checkered panels on the forearm and wrist are still in good shape and provide some added grip, and all of the original stock hardware such as the pistol grip cap and initial plate are still in excellent condition.
