L.C. Smith 4E 12 Gauge – NICE WOOD, JOSEPH LOY ENGRAVED, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1910, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 8oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 14 1/2", DAH 2 9/16", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: 212291 The Grade 4E L.C. Smith is a rare gun, with only 438 produced in 12ga., and most of the remaining guns have been abused and worn out over the last 100 years. This beautiful Elsie, sn212291 made in 1910, is a stunning gun with 75% factory case color covering the receiver (though faded, it is clearly 75% coverage) 100% blue on the barrels and trigger guard, and the factory original French walnut stocks are in perfect, 100% condition. We restored the wood, barrels, and trigger guard here in our shop. The gun was in superb mechanical condition and you could see the beautiful wood under 109 years of oil and dirt. We drew the oil soaking from the wood, raised any dents, touched up the checkering, and applied the hand-rubbed TruOil finish that brought out the full beauty of the wood while providing superior protection from the weather. The action, screws, and engraving remain in untouched factory condition with perfect, clean cut engraving and engraved by Joseph Loy, as his stylized signature is on the bottom of the action. Loy’s dogs are easily recognized with their boxy foreheads and delicate detail in the dog’s anatomy. He has great detail in the landscape surrounding the dogs, as well as the perfect, fine English scroll and borders surrounding this gun’s frame…awesome! The 4E also has beaded fences filed into the frame and the top of the action is gracefully sculpted. The end of the forend iron is also hand shaped and filed with raised beads. The trigger guard bow has a game scene vignette with two quail in a grassy scene. The Grade 4E L.C. Smith is a notably crafted gun. The 30” barrels have perfect mirror bores, factory bore diameter and chokes, lots of wall thickness, and are tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face with tight ribs. We chose to lengthen the chambers to 2 ¾” and extend the taper of the forcing cones to 1 ½” as it makes for a softer shooting, better patterning gun (a $250 service in our shop). Nearly all buyers of these fine guns today intend to shoot them afield and at the gun club, and this is an improvement that protects the wood on the gun from unnecessarily sharp recoil while shooting modern loads. The mechanics are in perfect working order with strong, well-timed ejectors, crisp triggers with delightful trigger pull weight, and the lever is well right of center. THIS IS A VFI CERTIFIED GUN WITH A 90 DAY MECHANICAL WARRANTY. The action and forend iron have been stripped to the smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned to bare metal, scrubbed, inspected for integrity and function, properly lubricated and reassembled. This is a $275 service in our shop already performed to insure your satisfaction with this fine Elsie! The stock dimensions are modern and the stock is a long 14 ½” LOP to the factory butt plate. Collecting L.C. Smith pre-1913 guns has been my passion for over 25 years, and this is one of the most solid Grade 4E’s I have had in 10 years. It is a rare opportunity when one comes up for sale that has no excuses, so do not hesitate on this one! All work to bring this 110-year-old gun back to new condition has been done and she is ready for another century of service for the new owner. What a great investment opportunity in a gun that is the epitome of fine L.C. Smith gunmaking. Thanks for looking!
