L.C. Smith Specialty 12 Gauge – 34” SINGLE BARREL TRAP, 98% FACTORY, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1919, 12 Gauge, 8lbs 10oz, Chokes IM, LOP 14 1/8", DAH 2", DAC 1 3/8" Serial Number: S14058 The Hunter Arms Co. was the maker of the famed L.C. Smith double barreled shotguns from the late 1800’s until the sale of the company to Marlin Arms Company in 1947. The L.C. Smith guns were built in numbers far greater than its competitors, and their guns have been sought after and coveted by knowledgeable shotgunners for nearly 130 years. In the early 1900’s the sport of Trap shooting was growing rapidly, and most of high-society attended the tournaments as they became grand social events. By the late teens the sport was very popular and American gunmakers began making trap specific guns with long single barrels and designed to win events from the 16-yard line to the 27-yard line in handicap events. Single barrel trap guns were built with great care, as the maker’s name and reputation were made by the notable wins in these highly competitive trap shoots. The guns were made to pattern and shoot better than anything we have today and were hand tuned before leaving the factory. This fine L.C. Smith Specialty Grade Single Barrel Trap is an excellent example of L.C. Smiths finely engraved offering that was available in their catalogs from 1917 until the close of business in 1950. This gun, snS14058 made in 1919 is in remarkable condition, retaining 98% factory case color, 99% factory barrel blue, 99% factory charcoal blue on the trigger guard, and perfect screws and bore. The 34” barrel is tight on the hinge pin and breech face and has the most desirable round post, donut based ventilated rib that was only used from 1917 until 1919 when it was replaced with a rectangular shaped stationary rib. The round post rib was able to expand and contract on the posts to allow for variable temperature differences between the barrel and rib. This system is very much like Winchester’s donut base, round post rib used on their Model 12 guns for a brief period. It was a superior system but proved too costly to continue use. The factory original wood retains 98% factory finish with only light handling marks and no cracks, splits, or repairs. The gun left the factory with a Silvers recoil pad that was mushroomed and hard as a rock. We replaced it with a genuine Silvers pad from England (not a reproduction) and applied a leather face to the butt for that special touch. The stock dimensions are modern and very shootable. See the stats below. Everything about this gun is super-high factory original condition and it is a stunning gun for being 103 years old. She is ready for heavy use or casual use without need of repair. They only made a total of 1470 Specialty Grade SBT’s, and only 516 with the most desirable 34” barrel. To find a pristine, investment quality example is a treasure, and this gun will continue to go up in value as you enjoy its use. You can look long and hard and you won’t find another L.C. Smith Specialty Grade SBT with a 34” barrel in this condition. Best of all it has an Improved Modified choke, which I like much better than the typical full choke found on these guns. It is perfect for most trap competitions. Thanks for looking!
