L.C. Smith 12-Gauge F-Grade Damascus-Barreled Hammergun, Restored and Fitted with 28-Gauge Briley Tubes
Description: The LC Smith F-Grade hammer shotgun was introduced in 1898 in three variations based on type of barrels. The F Grade cost $20 with fluid steel; $22 with twist-steel; and $25 with Damascus-steel barrels. The percentage of guns produced in each category is not known. Based on a modern database of F-Grade guns known to currently exist, it was probably less than 5%. In any case, they are scarce today. This Damascus-steel barreled LC Smith F-Grade 12-Gauge, which was manufactured in 1912, is restored to a condition similar to what it would have been after a couple of years use by the original owner. The English walnut stock has been reconditioned by drawing out damaging petroleum-based oils and replenishing natural oils through the application of a hand-rubbed stock-oil finish. Oil damaged wood behind the sidelocks is replaced with new wood. The checkering is re-cut. The forend iron is original; the forend wood is new. The length of pull is 14-1/2 inches to the end of an L.C. Smith hard-rubber dog-head buttplate, which would originally been on a higher-grade hammerless gun. The drop at the comb is 1-3/4 inches and at the heel is 2-7/8 inches. Cast is neutral. The receiver, sideplates, and bottom metal are re-color-case hardened by Victor’s Legacy Custom Gunsmithing in Fairport, OH. The 30-inch barrel are made of 2-rod Damascus steel in the Crolle pattern. They are fitted with 28-gauge full-length Briley tubes. The 28-gauge chambers are 2-3/4-inch, and the interchangeable chokes are improved cylinder and modified. The 12-gauge chambers are 2-3/4” and both chokes are cylinder. The exteriors of the barrels, as refinished using the traditional process of slow-rust bluing and etching, are flawless. The gun weighs 7 pounds 5 ounces without tubes and 8 pounds with tubes. Both triggers pull at 7 pounds. The gun locks up tightly, and all serial numbers, 169200, match. The price of this gun does not include shipping costs, which are paid by the buyer. The inspection period is 7 days from receipt. This shotgun has been fired with standard 28-gauge 2-3/4” shells and with 12-gauge 2-3/4” low-pressure shell produced for Damascus-barreled shotguns by RST Corporation. However, as for any vintage shotgun over a hundred years old, the seller recommends that the new owner have it inspected by his or her professional gunsmith before firing.
