L.C. Smith 12-Gauge F-Grade, Restored and Fitted with 20-Gauge & 28-Gauge Briley Full-Length Tubes

Description:
      This LC Smith F-Grade 12-Gauge, s/n 169200, was manufactured in 1912.  It is restored to a condition similar to what it would have been in after a couple of years use by the original owner.  First introduced in 1898, the LC Smith F-Grade was offered in three variations. The most expensive variation, of which this gun is an example, had barrels made of standard 2-rod Damascus-steel.  Although exact production numbers of each variation do not exist, only about 5% of F-Grade guns known to have survived are of the Damascus-barreled variation.  Many consider the L.C. Smith F-Grade to be among the most shootable of American hammer shotguns.   As fitted with 20-gauge and 28-gauge full-length Briley tubes, each with variable interchangeable chokes, this 12-gauge is also a very versatile shotgun.
       
        The original plain English walnut stock has been reconditioned by drawing out damaging petroleum-based oils and replenishing natural oils through the application of a hand-rubbed stock-oil finish.  Oil damaged wood behind the sidelocks is replaced with new walnut.  The checkering is re-cut and the pattern expanded.  The forend iron is original; the forend wood and its checkering are new.  The length of pull is 14-1/2 inches to the end of an L.C. Smith hard-rubber dog-head buttplate.  The drop at the comb is 1-3/4 inches and at the heel is 2-7/8 inches.  The cast is neutral.  The receiver, sideplates, and bottom metal are re-color-case hardened by Victor’s Legacy Custom Gunsmithing in Fairport, OH.  The 20-gauge full-length Briley inserts come with a set of five interchangeable chokes ranging from skeet to full.  The 28-gauge tubes come with improved cylinder and modified interchangeable chokes.  The gun can be shot without inserts only with 12-gauge low-pressure shells designed for Damascus-barreled shotguns, such as RST.  As refinished, the barrels’ high-contrast black-on-white Damascus pattern is very attractive.   As honed by Briley, the bores are bright with wall thicknesses of .020”- .025”.  The gun weighs 7 pounds 5 ounces without tubes, and 8 pounds with tubes.  Both triggers pull at 7 pounds of pressure.  The gun locks up tightly and all serial numbers match. 

        The price of this gun does not include shipping costs, which are paid by the buyer.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.   This gun has been shot with standard 28-gauge and 20-gauge target shells.  It has also been fired with12-gauge low-pressure shell produced specifically for Damascus-barreled shotguns.  However, as for any vintage shotgun over a hundred years old, the seller recommends that the new owner have it inspected by his or her professional gunsmith before firing.
