L.C. Smith Crown 12 Gauge – 30”, GORGEOUS WOOD, 1916, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: L.C. Smith, Year 1916, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 9oz, Chokes F/F, LOP 13 3/4", DAH 2 5/16", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: 219324 The Crown Grade Elsie; one of the finest, most elegant American doubles ever produced. The Crown Grade was a “MADE TO ORDER” shotgun, with only 800 or so made in all gauges, and only 639 made in 12 gauge. If you consider loss and damage, there are likely less than 550 Crown Grade 12’s left on the planet and of those less than 250 had 30” barrels. The records indicate that most Crown Grade guns were built with 32” barrels and big, bulky beavertail forends for the traps and live pigeons. What a find we have here with this 1916 vintage Elsie, sn219324, with its highly figured walnut stock, elaborately engraved with rose and scroll background and fine, deeply chiseled bird dogs on either side. I have had many fine Crown Grades and this one has better engraving than most. Just look closely and you will notice the same. The L.C. Smith was the only commercially successful sidelock gun from the glory days of the vintage American double. What a canvas to lay down your art as an engraver, and what a functional, strong, simple action was created in the venerable “Elsie”. This gun is in excellent condition, with excellent bores, perfect checkering and wood finish (restored by VFI with hand rubbed Truoil finish), 75% factory case color fading to silver on the bottom of the action, 100% richly rust-blued 30” F/F barrels (chokes can be altered to your preferences within 5 days of purchase) tight as new on breech face and hinge pin, lever way right of center, excellent screws, crisp properly functioning single selective trigger, and not often seen Prince of Wales style butt stock and splinter forend with modern shooting dimensions. ALL PARTS OF THIS GUN ARE FACTORY ORIGINAL (except for the new leather pad), INCLUDING THE WOOD, FOREND IRON, BARRELS, AND TRIGGER GUARD, WHICH ARE SERIAL NUMBERED TO THE ACTION. The gun came to us with a mushroomed pad, so we installed a fine leather covered pad that enhances the beauty of the gun. This is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, with a 90-day mechanical warranty, having gone through our Ultrasonic cleaner, all parts scrubbed to bright metal, inspected for function and integrity, lubricated properly, and reassembled, a $325 service in our shop. We also EXTENDED THE FORCING CONES TO 1 ½” TAPERS, REDUCING FELT RECOIL TO SHOOTER AND GUN WHILE PROVIDING BETTER PATTERNS LEAVING FEWER FLATTENED PELLETS TO FLY ERRANTLY FROM THE PATTERN, a $200 service in our shop. The gun is sparkling inside and out and will not need any attention for years to come. Balanced perfectly on the hinge pin, weighing 7lbs. 9oz. on the "regular" weight frame, it would be a great clays or mid-weight upland gun, and a gun that any fine gun enthusiast would be proud to have in their collection. A true collectible, investment quality firearm that will continue to rise in value as you enjoy its use. See the specs below. Thanks for looking!
