L.C. Smith Crown Grade 20 Gauge SxS Shotgun
Description: L.C. Smith Crown Grade 20 Gauge SxS Shotgun 32" VENT RIB, RARE GUN, GORGEOUS, BARGAIN! General Specs: LC Smith, Year 1919, 20 Gauge, Weight 7lbs., Side by Side Serial Number: 117006 This is a rare and desirable Crown Grade Elsie 20 gauge, sn117006 built in 1919. It would be a fantastic dove, pheasant, chukar, sharptail, upland, duck, and sporting clays gun as it is a L.C. Smith Crown Grade 20ga. with 32" vent rib barrels choked full and full with SSt, ejectors, beavertail, Monte Carlo stock, checkered butt, dynamite wood, one of 145 total Crown 20's, only 26 with 32" barrels, less than about 5 with ventilated rib. Mechanics are perfect, and there is plenty of case color and original blue remaining, and the superb game scene engraving is clear and sharp. THIS IS A RARE GUN BY ALL DEFINITIONS! The gun is superb, but there is one flaw. Look at the photos and you will see the buttstock was once cut and then the same piece was re-attached. It is a rare Monte Carlo style stock. The extension was perfectly re-attached and is not an eye sore, and the gun is still original as shipped with the original butt stock intact, save for the cut/reattach. If you like the gun but cannot live with the extension, there are a few good solutions that I will leave up to the next owner. Nearly every American vintage double that was manufactured with a Monte Carlo stock came from the factory with a butt pad. All the Parkers, Elsies, Ithaca's, etc. that I have ever owned with a Monte Carlo came with a pad, as they were target guns or live bird guns. If we take off the extension and install a vintage Hawkins pad (the most often seen pad on L.C. Smith guns), the LOP would be 13 3/4" from a mid position single selective trigger. That equates to a 14 1/4" LOP if the gun had 2 triggers and you were measuring from the front trigger, which is placed 1/2" ahead of a mid trigger SST. The gun can be bought for a lot less money than its real value if I can sell it to someone who appreciates the gun the way it is or with a pad. The reason we have not done this and then listed the gun with the pad is that the extension has a checkered butt and really is perfectly re-attached. I am torn as to leaving it long and show it with the extension, or just add the pad and find a guy that can shoot 13 3/4" LOP with the pad. It is a really rare, one of a kind high grade Elsie with super desirable 32" Vent Rib barrels. The next owner may choose to have the right barrel choke opened up to Modified, and we can do that in our shop for $90 within 2 weeks of purchase. We can also remove the extension and add the pad for $160 and within 2 weeks time. If the gun had never been cut, it would be a $30K gun all day long and an easy sale with the long vent rib barrels, Monte Carlo stock, beavertail, etc. I would sell the gun as it is, or with the proper Hawkins pad installed, for $21,950. At that price it allows enough room for the 3RD OPTION OF HAVING THE GUN RESTOCKED TO YOUR DIMENSIONS AND TO FACTORY SPECS AND WITH YOUR CHOICE OF WOOD. The cost to restock to the highest quality is $4000 or so and you would have the finest of the fine L.C. Smith Crown Grades in 20 bore, stocked to your liking, one of a handful in existence, and it would look perfect as it came from the factory. Restocking would take 6-8 months and you would have a gun that would be worth more than you paid for it, making it a grand investment opportunity.
