L.C.Smith
Description: L.c. Smith Quality 6 - 10 ga. 32” fine damascas bls., marked XXX. The Houchins book has a short section on these XXX guns, they are very rare. There are no records on these early Syracuse guns, but the engraving pattern on this gun is quality 6. I have showed this gun to many very serious collectors and all agree. Serial no. suggests ca. 1887. Bls have had a professional rebrown and hold 100% of that finish. No dents, or pitting outside. Some pitting inside. Frame is untouched from origin, so has a gray/brown patina. Opening lever slightly to the right. Wood is, I believe, circassion walnut of very high quality, and is original to the gun. There is a repair to the wood to the left of the top lever, the wood has been professionally refinished and recheckered . I think the refinished wood is outstanding. The buttplate is the extra thick type, and original to the gun. I’m including a period cleaning rod made for a 10 ga. Gun. It has a dummy 10 ga brass shell case that fits the chamber and allows for the the expanding brush head to expand as it leaves the chamber to clean the bore. I’ve never seen a rod like this. The rod is marked “Budds Pat. 1876”. Also included is a good quality wood and canvas case w/brass corners fitted for the 32” bls. This gun is a very early L.C. Smith Syracuse of the second highest quality made at the time.Only the quality 7 gun is a better grade. Very few of these guns exist today and even fewer in this condition. I’m sure this gun will be of interest to the most serious of collectors. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: L.C.
