James MacNaughton & Sons 12 Bore “Edinburgh Gun” Round Action Ejector with Beautifully Figured Nitro Damascus Barrels
Description: Very handsome and great handling MacNaughton 12 bore “Edinburgh Gun” round action with highly figured nitro Damascus barrels and well figured French walnut stock and forearm. MacNaughton serial number 2321 was made in 1900 and was professionally restored in the UK and little used since then. Only about 308 MacNaughton round actionswere ever made! Interestingly, the brass nameplate on the case lid features the owner’s name “Ewan MacNaughton”. The gun utilizes the MacNaughton trigger plate action on a rounded action bar with Dickson’s patent cocking slide and it has the removable metal striker access plate on the top strap.
Nicely engraved in Best Fine Scroll it has the words “MacNaughton” and “Edinburgh” in a scrolling banner across the fences. It has double triggers, automatic ejectors, auto safety and the signature MacNaughton toggle safety lever. There is some mild pitting on the breech face. Presented in its leather case with accessories and maker’s label. Easy to carry for a day afield at 7lb 1oz.
The rebrowned 28” nitro Damascus barrels are nicely figured and chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding low pressure 2-1/2” cartridges are readily available in the US from ClaysAmmo, Game Bore and RST Shells. The barrels are topped by a raised concave gamestyle rib on which is engraved “James MacNaughton 26 Hanover Street Edinburgh & Perth”. The bores are shiny and bright. The right barrel is bored 0.735 with a constriction of 0.010 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.021. The left barrel is bored 0.739 and has a constriction of 0.042 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is also 0.021.
The replacement straight hand stock and splinter forearm are made of well figured French walnut. Checkering is crisp. The forearm has finely engraved forearm tip and an Anson pushrod release. Stock dimensions are 14-7/8” including the one-inch leather covered recoil pad by 1-1/2” by 2-1/8”. Cast off for the righthanded shooter.
It’s rare, it’s beautiful and great handling. What are you waiting for?
