Marlin 55 Original Goose Gun – 12 Gauge – 36" Barrel – 1975 Model – JM Barrel Stamp

From 1962 until 1996, Marlin produced the Model 55 Goose Gun, otherwise known as the Original Marlin Goose Gun, as is stamped on the barrel. The long barrel and 3 inch chamber gave hunters the ability to really reach out when needed. The bolt action was solid and reliable. To many hunters, the bolt action was familiar, almost like a hunting rifle and it was certainly a solid action. We probably shouldn’t have used past tense in saying all of that as these guns are still downing lots of geese today.

Based on the serial number of 25668496, we believe that this shotgun was manufactured in 1975. This just also has the desirable JM stamp on the barrel. Like the other Model 55 guns, it has the 36 inch barrel with a fixed Full choke. A single bead sight sits at the end of the barrel. The shotgun will handle 3 inch Magnum loads but it will also fire 2-3/4 inch shells. A manual safety is located on the right side of the receiver.

A one piece walnut stock emphasizes function and sturdiness over fancy looks. A brown, ventilated recoil pad sits at the end of the stock. The sling swivels are detachable if you’d like to remove them.

The action on the gun is smooth. The bore is very clean and the barrel is bright. The wood stock does show minor signs of use, but not abuse. We’d grade the wood as Very Good. The metal finish is Excellent, with just a few pencil lead sized spots of finish loss. The recoil pad is also Very Good. Our customer reports that he used the gun for 2 seasons but it has seen little use otherwise.

The Goose Gun is a conversation piece, we get that. However, it’s also a very effective long-range shotgun with a dense shot pattern. Sometimes, you need a gun that will knock something out of low earth orbit. The Original Marlin Goose Gun with its magnum loads will do just that for you!
