Merkel 201E 20ga – 1955, EJECTORS, PURDEY STYLE PAD, vintage firearms
Description: General Specs: Merkel, 1955, 20 Gauge, 6lbs. 5oz. Chokes CYL/M, LOP 14 5/16", DAH 2 3/4", DAC 1 9/16" Serial Number: 42207 Merkel of Suhl Germany is an incredible gun maker. They make all manner of fine guns that run the gamut from entry level side by side guns to more elaborate, ejector over under guns. This example, built in 1955, weighing just 6lbs. 5oz. Combine that with a pistol grip and slim 3-piece forend and you have a fast, dynamic gun which can be carried all day with little fatigue. Choked CYL/M and factory chambered for 2 3/4” shells, this is an excellent forest gun for grouse and early season pheasants. This 50+ year-old is a fine example of fine German engineering shows with 99% barrel blue, 85% trigger guard aging to a pleasant patina, mirror shiny bores, ribs and action tight on the breech face, a Kersten crossbolt, tactile cocking indicators, and great stock dimensions. Areas of vivid case color remain, especially on the right side of the receiver and under the lever, with the rest of the receiver weathering to a pleasing silver and patina finish. Excellent checkering, deep rich wood color, and a professionally plugged sling mount (see Picture), and finished with Vintage Firearms best butt treatment- a leather covered Purdey-style pad – which is a $625 service at Vintage Firearms. This is our best grade of pad; it offers just the right amount of ‘slip’ when mounting the gun and the perfect amount of ‘stick’ when you are taking your shot. All this amounting to an attractive German made over/under with plenty of character and many hunts ahead of it.
