1943 Vintage WW2 Winchester Model 12 U.S. Military 12 Ga. Riot Shotgun
** Scarce WW2-Production Model 12 Riot **
Description: Made in 1943 for U.S. Military use in World War 2, this Winchester has a 20.75" inch barrel with a "Cylinder" choke and is an original military contract shotgun. The receiver is stamped with "U.S." and a flaming U.S. Ordnance bomb on the right side below the ejection port, the top of the barrel is marked with a flaming U.S. Ordnance bomb (faint) just forward of the oval Winchester factory proof, and the stock is marked with the U.S. Military crossed cannons cartouche and the inspector's initials. The inspector for this Winchester Model 12 Riot gun was Lt. Colonel Guy H. Drewry, his initials are the boxed "G.H.D." on the stock. You will also notice two small punch dots on top of the barrel and receiver next to the Winchester factory proofs, these are where the U.S. Military tested the metal hardness before it was accepted into U.S. inventory. These "take-down" Model 12 Riot guns were serial numbered on both the bottom of the receiver and barrel assembly, and this gun is all-matching. This WW2 Winchester Model 12 Riot gun is a beautiful example of this scarce and sought-after military shotgun. The blue finish, which has been restored/reblued at some point has a very nice deep glossy blue color to it that is very close to the factory finish this gun had when it left the factory in 1943. We are not sure when the re-finish was done exactly, but it appears to be several decades old at a minimum, and done by someone who knew what they were doing. There was very little buffing done as 95% of the original factory and military stampings are still clean, and legible, and all of the sharp edges and corners on the gun are not rounded. Mentioned earlier, the only stamp on the gun that looks faint is the small flaming bomb on top of the barrel. As you can see from the pictures the gun shows some minor handling marks, scratches, dings, and light finish wear that give it a very attractive "combat-used" look to it. There are no major eyesores, pitting under the finish, or repairs visible. Our best guess is that the gun showed a lot of honest but superficial finish wear from being carried, and a previous owner many, many years ago refinished the metal to make the outside as clean-looking as the inside of the gun. The bore in the "Cylinder" choked 20.75" inch barrel is mirror-bright and pristine. There is no pitting, dents, bulges, or visible imperfections whatsoever throughout the bore, and the original front sight bead is still in place. The original smooth Walnut factory stock set is in excellent condition overall. Both the forearm and buttstock are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage. The wood does not appear to ever have been refinished or sanded, as the original U.S. cartouches are crisp, the factory varnish shows honest wear and handling marks, and the wood is perfectly fit to the gun in all areas, including the fitment of the factory Winchester-branded buttplate. Both stock parts are a perfect match to each other in every way, from the color of the wood and finish to the degree of visible wear/handling marks. As mentioned earlier, the internals of this Model 12 Riot are in excellent condition and show little to no mechanical wear. This gun was obviously carried a lot more than it was actually fired during it's U.S. Military service and subsequent life. All of the controls are in perfect working order, and the action on this Winchester is slick but precise, locking into battery perfectly. This Winchester would no doubt shoot just as reliably today as it did 76 years ago when it was built. This really is a great-looking 1943-production example of this sought-after U.S. Military shotgun made by Winchester, and due to the old refinish it is priced thousands under what an original-finish example would cost in this condition.
