Exceptional US Issue WW2 Savage Model 720 Shotgun
Description: ON HOLD. This is an exceptional original ‘ as issued’ - probably unfired - World War 2 production Savage Model 720 12 gauge shotgun that is U.S. Military proofed. Both the U.S. Army Air Corp and the U.S. Navy bought Savage Model 720 shotguns in long barrel and short barrel riot gun versions. The long 26 inch barrel guns like this one were sent to training bases/schools to be used in training both pilots and gunners to hit moving targets with a "lead". A small number of the long barreled version were also used for base security guard duty guns. Some 17,500 WW II U.S. Military issued Savage Model 720s were produced in 1943 - 1944, their serial number range is 69,400 - 88,250. This Savage 720 has full US military markings, the receiver is stamped on the left side with a "P”over U.S. Ordnance flaming bomb, and "U.S.”, the barrel is also stamped with a “P” over US Ordnance flaming bomb. The barrel also bears, in addition to standard Savage manufacturer’s marks, four **** marks at the breech indicating it is full choked. This US Model 720 is in exceptional untouched-original-military as issued ‘ attic’ condition. It is possibly unfired. The barrel, frame, and trigger guard retain 98% original blue with no handling wear, with some old oil residue, and a very few age spots. The bolt is in the white with old oiled surface, the magazine floor plate is in the white with a few age stains and old oil residue. The bore is excellent and mechanical functions are excellent. The walnut stocks retain all their original untouched dull military oil finish with a very few light storage marks, the hard rubber buttplate shows no wear. This US Savage shotgunshows little or no use and has neverm been ‘cleaned’, it presents in the same condition as the day it was issued. Savage Model 720 US issue shotguns are hardly ever seen in this pristine untouched/unfired state. Given general arms production figures for US WW II small arms the US Savage 720 should be rated one of the scarcer items for a collector of Us WW II small arms. This one would be well at home in any high-condition-collection, and very hard to up-grade. This US issued Model 720 was recently found in a Newport, RI estate. It is extremely likely this is a US Navy issued gun. From the 19th century until the early 1970s Newport, RI was home to a major US Naval base. The US Navy War College was, and still is, part of the Newport Navy Base. From the 1870s up to 1943 the Newport Naval base was home to the US Naval Torpedo Station. All US Navy torpedoes were designed and built at Newport until 1943 when an independent contractor was called upon for added torpedo production to meet WW II needs. Newport Naval Base was a vital part of America’s war effort during WW II and its critical facilities would have been given the tightest security possible at the time. This Model 720 very likely was issued for base protection against spies, saboteurs, and the like and probably taken home after the war by a naval officer, many of whom did and still do retire to Newport, RI. We believe this Model 720 has been in the Newport, RI area since the day it was issued. Dimensions: Savage Model 720 semi-automatic shotgun, 12 gauge, 26” bbl., full choke.
